I lived in New England most of my life. I understand what you are saying when you describe the unfriendliness of the area. I would suggest a neighborhood rather than a place with lots of space. If you can find a cluster of homes where kids can ride their bikes and play in the backyard with other kids you will have a better sense of community than if everyone is on 2+ acre lots. There are some nice "developments" that would fit that bill. There are going to be unfriendly people everywhere, unfortunatley, but for the most part I think folks are just busy and don't take time to be good neighbors.

I had a neighbor who is a school teacher with 4 young kids, all under the age of 12. She sold her house in MV to move to Urbana for the school system. She is quite happy withe the decision that she made. It's been 4 years now...

Now is a good time to buy as prices have come down.
