Patuxent
Hey there
I have a friend who lives near and works at Patuxent NAS. I'm thinking of paying him a visit in February, and was wondering what was worth checking out while I was there? Local restaurants, laid back bars???
We'll most likely hit DC, but are there things to do while I'm in Patuxent? Is is possible to boat there in February (15' fishing boat) or would the weather that time of year make it miserable?

Well I wouldn't get your hopes up for going boating, it would probably be miserable unless you are from Alaska? It wouldn't be enjoyable for sure.
There are things to do in St. Mary's Co. but most places are much better to go to in warmer weather. Theres St. Mary's City , Pt. Lookout and some other Historical places if you google that I'm forgetting about, if your into that stuff. Otherwise I would just head up to DC for all your culture , museums type stuff.
Its been years since I've lived there ,but we would go to Solomons Island and hit a few of the bars over there. Its a short drive from the base, oh yeah "don't drink and drive" !!! Hope it helps , but to be honest its not the most exciting place in the world for a single person. But thats OK the locals like it that way.

The base has a museum sort of place where you can learn what the base is all about. We thought that was interesting. It is near the entrance of the base. We also drove to a civil war museum and there was a beach and picnic area just South of there. There were several little towns around the area that had many interesting Amish type merchandise, etc. I loved visiting my son when he was stationed there. St. Mary's College is down highway 5 on the way to Point Lookout.
When you see the extra little lane at the side of the road, it is for the horse drawn carriages.

So I'm guessing the boat idea is out. That's fine since I'll save money on not having to rent a boat and save on gas not having to drive a truck 600 miles!
Solomons Island sounds interesting. He says it's about 10 miles away from where he lives. Just curious, what is Lexington Park like? Is it a place where I can stop by a coffee shop in the morning and walk (dressed for cold weather of course) around town?
Sounds like the NAS Museum and Point Lookout may be worth checking out as well...

Lexington Park has two main drags, neither of which is really pedestrian friendly. One is a throwback to the your standard 1950s-1960s military town, kind of run down, seedy even. The other is the result of all the BRAC changes and is 6 lanes wide with office buildings filled with government contractors and big box stores (Best Buy, Target, etc) surrounded by parking lots.
Look at the satellite photos of PAX River on google maps. You'll see the base, two roads with some parking lots, and lots of residential areas. That's about it.

I see what you mean. I was looking at the intersection of 246 and Three Notch Road and saw some stuff around there. Thought maybe there would be a coffee shop and sidewalks for me to explore about. Sidewalks and walkable cities are getting rarer every day.
Maybe I'll see a sidewalk in a museum one day?

I lived there a while ago - nothing cute, nothing quaint - just stuff - Lexintognpark is pretty crummy. No "town" to wander around etc" . Leonardtown is OK for a little quaint. St. Marys City is quite interesting if you like history. The Marine Museum in Solomons is OK, good places for lunch - you are still in the 'not much; going on area. Unless you are going to Annapolis or DC, the pickings are slim or selective. I spent 20 years in Calvert and St. Marys and whenver we did
