Default Tell me about Takoma Park

In discussing with my friend my desire to get a home, she mentioned Takoma Park as being a nice, reasonable area. On the first many pages here I found little about Takoma Park. What can you tell me? My primary concern is safety. I rent in Cleveland Park in DC right now and feel spoiled by that. Let me know anything you can tell me as I have not been to TP before. Thanks!

PS: I was particularly wondering about the area where New Hampshire Ave intersects with the East-West Hwy.

It takes a certain kind of individual to live in TP. I guess more along the lines of the artistically inclined. They do have some very nice areas and nice houses. As far as that intersection, it is pretty busy and crowded there especially on a Friday evenings. Great spot to live if your commute is to DC.
Sorry couldn't be of more help since I don't live in that area, drive through it a lot though.

I've never been to Takoma Park but it is often described as the Berkeley of the east coast. This may give you a clue about what the environment is like around there.

I live north off New Hampshire. That is probably the worst end of Takoma Park. From the weekly local paper there is a lot of crime like drug deals, robberies and a LOT of illegals hang out in that area. Then further west going towards downtown Silver Spring the area turns into this nice Norman Rockwell/hippie/yuppie oasis. Such a shame b/c I don't even shop in that area I always drive to college park or Laurel to shop.

Read the first paragraph under "background" and then read the rest of the document.

Do you really want to live in a city - no matter how "cute" and artsy-fartsy Berkley it is - that is a sanctuary city for illegal aliens??

And people living in Takoma Park are actually PROUD OF THIS CRAP!

LOL! The thing is illegals, unless they are trust fund kids from Europe overstaying their tourist visas, cannot afford to live in Takoma Park. Those nice bungalows and Victorians go for big bucks while rentals are few and far between.

There is that aforementioned area closer to PG, but that is out of sight and out of mind for the benovelent souls of the PRTP.
