If you consider the whole package: commute (to Walter Reed) resale value (we might have to move in several years), communities - where would you live? We have two small children but we still like to "do stuff" on weekends. HELP!!!! I need to make a decision by this weekend!
I say Olney, even though it's a further commute to Walter Reed, it's also I straight shot, just go down Georgia Ave and follow it into DC, Olney is also more peaceful of a place to raise children who like to do stuff, the big backyard should help and cost of living is a little cheaper than Chevy Chase since it's further from the city

Perhaps, but knowing the crap my parents had to deal with growing up there and the crap I had to deal with growing up, I cannot in good faith recommend living there to anyone that cares about their family...

I am so happy to be far enough away from DC to get away from all of the crime and filth, but still be close enough to all of the great things MD has to offer...

You know, that's a really CRAPPY thing to say about someone's community, and how did we segway into a "Bash PG County" angle when the OP started the thread asking about Montgomery County?

I have lived in PG County 3yrs come this April, and the Hyattsville area has really been revived, as has National Harbour and Bowie/Largo town centers with lots of shopping etc.. Stick to the topics you know about, as times change and PGC has changed as well.

I'm sorry I didn't mean to diss anyone's "hood". Where else have you lived in MD to compare? I thought Silver Spring was a great area until I moved to southern MD where there is virtually no violent crime. When I was younger growing up in Silver Spring and Olney, I had been robbed and beaten so bad I was put in the hospital. Both houses I lived in were broken into and our cars were vandalized numerous times... Drugs were pervasive throughout the area... These are the things I do know about. My grandma lived in Riverdale up until 6 months ago when she was put into a nursing home. My parents say it looks even worse now than when they lived there...

My main point was to tell the OP basically what areas I would stay away from. Some people defend PG county to the death and I don't understand it... Do I feel ok walking around PG, sure... I feel I could take care of myself. Would I let my 13 year old sister... no way... If you live in a crime free area and move to somewhere like seat pleasant or palmer park, you are going to be in for a shock even though someone like you thinks the area is fine...

I agree man, they build all these fancy shopping districts and all that happens is they get trashed by stupid ignorant street thugs who think they're tough, walking around stealing and robbing citizens, and the morons who run the local governments in the area just ignore it, all they wanna do is build fancy shopping centers, expensive houses, & highways, just so the area can statistically appear affluent & rich, the only Montgomery & PG County stat that sticks out to me is the crime rate, thanks the "gangstas" that run around robbing working & middles class innocent people, someone should form a renegade crime fighting agency in this area, similar to the guardian angels, I actually have had half a mind to start one myself
