Default Columbia housing recommendations please

Hi, moving to Columbia most likely. Anyone have apartment recommendations or private renters that they know? My fiance and I are looking for a quieter, safer area with trails and land near the place, we have two small dogs to walk. I was looking up apartment ratings and was very upset how many people stated that their cars/apt was broke into, so I would be interested in a gated place also. Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated! Also, does anyone know if there is a local newspaper there? The Columbia Flyer does not have apt classifieds.

Is the commute bearable to New Hampshire ave in Silver Spring?

Columbia is not what it was. There are nice places that are probably in safe areas (though not necessarily 'quiet'), but they're going to be pretty new and very expensive - like around the Columbia Mall.

There is also the Howard County Times - dunno what they've got for classifieds though.

The highways gets pretty busy during commuting times. You'd either get over to I95 to the beltway (495) to get to NH Ave (650), or take Rt 29 down to the beltway and over to NH Ave.

The commute is definately bearable to Silver Spring. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes straight down 29. There are plenty of apartment communities in the greater Columbia area- too many to list. Ellicott City and some of the new places in Elkridge are also good options.

Depends on your price range. The apartments around the mall are nice but they are kinda expensive. The commute to silver spring won't be too bad but not too great either it's very busy around rush hour in that area. But you may be able to find something around the Wheaton area but I don't know about those apartments, but that is a better commute to silver spring. In Columbia pretty much the more you pay for an apartment the most likely it is a nicer community. The very cheapest ones you want to avoid. Not just in terms of crime but like also how well maintenance responds to issues, mold, pest, and things of that nature. But there are many decent and nice communities to choose from, and not just columbia but the neighboring cities also. You gotta look at the ratings for every complex you may be interested in. Apartmentratings.com is a good source.
