Commuting in the DC area (Bethesda, Damascus: fit in, neighborhoods, quality of life)

Hi, my husband is thinking about taking a job in Chevy Chase MD. We are thinking of starting a family and would like to live in a nice small town like I grew up in. I'm from the midwest and I am clueless about the commuter culture in big cities like DC. We really like the town of Brunswick MD but it may be too tough of a commute for my husband. I think his total commute would be about an hour and a half or so. Is this unusal for the DC area?? Are there any other nice small towns within commuting distance of Chevy Chase?? Thanks, any comments would be helpful.

I also like Brunswick. Where in Chevy Chase will he be working? There are some metro options that might work for him. Other areas you might look at are Brookeville, Damascus, Poolesville, Boyds and Urbana. Even some of the closer in areas like Kensington and Bethesda have neighborhoods where you can get the small town feel. It might make your husbands quality of life a little better if he can limit his time in traffic. I grew up in a small town in Connecticut, moved to Kensington thinking I would never like it of fit in and I can't imagine leaving. I have found a wonderful community with welcoming people and lots of neighborhood activities.
