Not the amish down here. They are your real horse & buggy, no shower taking, no electricity using amish... It is so freakin annoying to get stuck behind a horse & buggy...

tercel, seriously check it out before you buy the food. I lived in lancaster county pa and on sundays drove 4 miles an hour for many miles passing buggy after buggy. But still some of them have compromised on the farming practices. I used to see the horse and buggy amish in the farm store buying pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. just ask them though they will be very honest about what they use.

With the housing market being what it is at the moment, you might get lucky and find something nice for the price you can afford in Charles County or St Mary's. Don't be fooled by the fact that it is closer to the water. I live in that area and I know that house prices are falling just like every where else. Better still, find a real estate agent who can find those homes for you.

I agree with Tercel.....maybe where you are from that's the way they do business but down in our area, you can just look at the produce to know they don't use pesticides. You have to wash the veggies well and you'll see God's little creatures falling off. I have bought whole pigs from them and you can tell by the taste that those animals are not fed the rubbish and hormones that the commercial markets uses. Fresh fish and crabs are caught in the morning before the market opens. I know, I talk to the Amish people all the time.

Hey organick -
I think some of the pps aren't familiar with your philosophies, but I think I am based on your requirements - because those are my requirements too. You could have every single thing on your list (except the land) in Takoma Park, Maryland. Co-op grocery store in town with good organic selections. Producers only farmers market weekly and year round. Waldorf School (acorn hill) within a couple miles. Very open minded. VERY active attachment parenting group.
Another area that wouldn't be horrenduous commute to Acorn Hill which also meets your other requirements (other than land) would be Mount Rainier, Maryland. It's a "transitional" area so you might actually be able to afford a house there. Montessori school located in town and a Friends school is a few miles away.
Honestly, if I were you, I would look up where the Waldorf Schools are in the D.C. area and base my search around those areas. You're not going to get the land though and for 225K you could probably only get a condo.
But your post spoke to me so I felt I should reply.
