Default Why are there so many people moving from New York and California?

Just curious because I've seen a lot of posts from people moving from New York and California. Is it the high taxes....the lifestyle there...etc? There was a time I would have jumped to live in New York but after 9-11 I totally reconsidered...but I'm just curious as to what could be setting off the trend now?

One word YES! It is extremely expensive to live in NYC especially if you have a family. taxes are higher in NY especially places like Long Island. In maryland you can still buy a decent starter home for $300,000 in a decent area here good luck finding that. I truly dont feel there is a middle class in NYC. Im desperately trying to leave! Ive been applying to jobs in DC &MD both state and healthcare jobs. Yes pay in NYC is more but you cant get much for that pay!

Yeah, that's truly a shame...I live in philly and I keep hearing that the state is taxing New Yorkers for everything! There are plenty of posts in the philly forum as well from people moving out of New York. I would get out too. I also have a girlfriend who lives in California and she can't find stable employment there. She's desperately trying to get back to Maryland just to have a stable job.

Are you asking why people are moving out of CA and NY in general or why they are moving out of CA and NY INTO Maryland?

I agree with the reasons mentioned in other posts. Those states are very tough to live in. They have high taxes across the boards and their Economies are weakening significantly! I read over the week that CA's highest state tax rate is 9.3%. I figured the cutoff for this max rate would be high, but it was only $ 48K!

Those states tax people left and right and have extremely high cost of living. Housing prices will decline (and significantly), but people will still be able to have a higher QOL in many other locations than in NY and CA. In many cases, positions don't really pay that much more (enough to adjust for the true COL increase). California is a complete disaster. Too much Government, too many Government programs, too many regulations and lawsuits, taxes that are too high, too much power to unions and so on. Unfortunately, it seems our new President is following the California model.

This Californian now living in Maryland is having a tough time telling the two apart between the state taxes here and state and local government/ regulations.

Is it really that bad in Maryland?

I figured it would be a hight tax, high regulation state since it's run by Leftists but didn't think the tax situation was that bad. The sales tax is only 6% which is less than Indiana.

The kicker is getting charged Maryland state income tax on the cars we bought in California and brought in to Maryland. Oh, and driving through Takoma Park, a self styled "sanctuary city" and dodging the drunk illegal day laborers who stumble out on to University Blvd while hundreds of people loiter in the gas station and strip mall parking lots.

I'm glad I have a (non government) job in DC I love, because Maryland itself is all the bad stuff from California plus crappy weather.

Lisa123..I was referring to moving from New York and Cali in general....

rb4browns...does MD really tax you on cars not bought there or did I misunderstand you? I see I need to understand the tax structure there a lot better!

Default Another take on this subject....

To all CA and NY residents considering MD: If you are a current or aspiring gun-owner and seek to enjoy your Second Amendment rights, then avoid Maryland. CA, NY, and MD are very much in line with each other regarding the right to protect yourself. And DC is just as bad as well, if not worse.
