Lightbulb Working in DC & Baltimore, where to live?

My husband and I are moving to MD this summer. He will be commuting to DC (Catholic University) and I will likely be working in Baltimore City. Friends have suggested Columbia or Laurel, but after visiting, we thought they might be too spread out (suburban) for us; we couldn't find a center. I think we might prefer City life with a couple of caviates: 1. it would need to be family friendly, even though we don't have kids yet & 2. one of us will need to commute. Is the commute that bad from Baltimore to DC, even via train? Any advice about the commute or where to live would be helpful. Thanks!
