Hello. I'm relocating to DC to take a job in Capitol Hill (near Union Station). I am looking at buying a home in the MD Burbs -- Baltimore County seems least expensive --- and commuting to DC by commuter rail. I have about 260K to spend. I also have 2 young children (elementary age) and a spouse who is in the medical/healthcare field. Any opinions (neighborhoods, home prices, crime, commute, anything, etc, etc)? Thanks in advance!

Hi
If you need help in finding a place in Baltimore County, I might be able to help. I know the Washington DC area very well.
As for spending $260k, you may have to look out in Baltimore County, unless you dont mind a townhouse then I think we may be able to get you something.
As for the commute from Baltimore County to DC, your best bet is to take the Marc train, its probably about a 1:15 hour commute to work. If you wanted to spend about $375k, you could get a townhouse or a house where you could be 30 minutes away from work or at least in a better neighborhood.
Let me know if you need any help.

If you have children forget Baltimore County. The schools and the crime rate isn't that great. I would try to look at Howard County maybe Waldorf areas... Like the other poster said, you maybe able to get a townhouse. I live in the County just above Baltimore County (Harford) where I have a single family home way under that budget, and the schools are better and there is less crime. I travle the MARC commuter rail it takes about 1:15 from Edgewood (my city) to Union Station. The downfall is, its' pricey per month to commute and you spend most of your time commuting to and from work; which is why I am looking to move from Maryland all together... Don't get me wrong, I love where I live but the work is in DC and there is just no affordable safe place to live south of the toll plaza.
