Default Kemp Mill and Forest Knolls Neighborhoods of Silver Spring...Decent Areas to Live?

I'm new to the DC area, currently renting in College Park but looking to buy sometime soon. Housing prices seem pretty high in the MD suburbs of DC. I want something affordable in a decent neighborhood but not way out in the country where you have to drive 5 miles to get to a grocery store. I've noticed that houses in the Kemp Mill and Forest Knolls neighborhoods of Silver Spring seem more reasonably priced and driving through those neighborhoods they seem nice. Could someone please offer some advice on these two neighborhoods? I'm single, 45.

Thanks!

Hi, I live in Kemp Mill. It's a decent place to live. The area has a large Orthodox Jewish population (which I'm part of). It's a mix of working class-middle class families, a lot of generic 1950's and 1960's tract homes. It's affordable, we rent a nice 4 brd house for under $2000. Biggest drawback is the Wheaton metro is not in walking distance. You can either take Metrobus, park at the station for $4.50 or do what I do and park .5 miles away on street parking and walk. It's close to the Wheaton Mall and a number of grocery stores and CVS. Nobody will ever say Kemp Mill is the nicest part of Silver Spring but I don't think anyone is going to say it is ghetto or unpleasant either.
