Looking for Family Friendly town in MD, with decent commute to Alexandria, VA
We are looking for a family friendly place to buy a home in MD. My husband is from the eastern side of Baltimore, and all of his family is still there, and he will be working in Alexandria, VA. We have two children, 10 and 14, so we need some place safe and with good schools, and hopefully a reasonable commute for my husband. I've been reading the threads, and am now at a loss... It seems that all the places I thought were decent are not, and some that are decent are EXPENSIVE! We would like to find a place under 350K. Is that posible?

That's the problem with MoCo...if you want anything safe with good schools, you have to pay the big bucks to live downcounty, such as Potomac, Kensington or Bethesda. I'm not sure you could even get a townhouse for 350K there.

What about Crofton? Is AA co better?
I've been reading posts about Crofton, is AA co more affordable/safe? I am from New Orleans, so it's not like I've never been around crime, but I'm looking to get away from that atmosphere.

I don't really know much about AA county, except that I've always heard it was also fairly expensive but more rural. Sorry I can't help more; I'm not from MD originally either. Here's a link to their police info AACOPD Home Page.

Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the info! My head is swimming from looking at places on the net, but looking at houses doesn't give you much of a story about the areas.

Commuting from anywhere in Maryland to Alexandria is going to be difficult. It may improve once the bridge work on the Wilson Bridge and the nearby interchanges is complete. Even assuming that the bridge bottleneck is improved, some of the communities closest to the Wilson Bridge don't have the best reputation. Perhaps Fort Washington in PG County might meet your criteria. I know someone who moved there from Alexandria and is pleased with their new neighborhood, but I haven't visited them there, and I really don't know much about Fort Washington or the quality of the schools.
