Forget PG county. Go Germantown or somewhere in Northern Virginia instead. The commute and the schools will both be better than in PG. If you didn't care about schools then Laurel / Beltsville is a good choice.

forget PG. you're on the wrong side of the beltway! the commute to western Bethesda would be he!!ish, still ugly even in off-hours.

There are some nice places in northern Silver Spring (north of the beltway) and even in Ashton (near Rt 108 & NH Ave/650). but I think that's into MoCo at that point.

Once you're west off 29 you're in MC.

Germantown to Bethesda? Really? Doesn't sound good to me at all, but maybe I'm missing something route-wise.

Also, I wouldn't live in Germantown personally, at least not again. Some parts were fine, but others ... not so much.

Laurel between Rt29 and I95 is fine. Parts of Silver Spring is good (it's very large). Bethesda, Potomac, and Chevy Chase are very nice (but very expensive). You could look in Prince William County. Property values have really come down out there and you can get a good house but the travel time will be bad.

For the amount he wants to pay where else can he go? 270 is bad, but Germantown to W.Bethesda is going to be much easier than getting there from PG County. Germantown is not all bad. It's much better than PG though, especially the schools.

Stay away from Hyattsville. There are very few good parts in PG County. That is definitely not one of them.
