My husband is stationed at Ft Meade and we live in Odenton. We live in a decent townhouse in a decent-ish neighborhood very close to base and pay $1600 a month in rent plus...an ungodly amount in utilities. As a young single airman I would advise you to make friends and split a place. It's really a tough bind we're in here: we hardly get BAH and if you live too far away the commute is unbearable. I avoid going anywhere during rush hours if possible; I'll be attending UMB in the fall and I anticipate at least a 45 minute drive. The dorms on base might be a good idea if you don't want to spend all of your discrectionary income on housing, utilities, and fuel.

Also around here each town has its pockets of "ghetto" and nicer parts. You really can't go by town. There are parts of Odenton that are downright trashy (Yes, 175 outside base looks pretty rugged...and is) but the whole town isn't like that. You just need to be flexible and, honestly, probably lower your standards a lot. You'll definitely pay for convenience and safety.
