Ocean City Maryland
Hi! I am doing a little research for a friend of mine that would like to vacation in Ocean City Maryland this August. I would greatly appreciate any insight I can share with her on where to stay, fun places to go, if there are places to avoid, safety issues etc..
She is looking for a place for 5 adults, 3 kids, 2 dogs and a partridge in a pear tree. They don't have a huge vacation budget but are hoping to be able to have this work for their family vacation.
Just a thought would it be less expensive for them to stay a little outside Ocean City, (is it rehobeth that is close?), and just drive to Ocean City for the kids to have fun on the boardwalk, or putt putt golfing, etc..
Thank you all for any help you can offer! Have a wonderful day!

I'm looking into a family trip down to OC as well, and found what seems to be a great place for kids, inexpensive, and just over the bridge from Ocean City in West Ocean City:

I'm probably going the last week of June/1st week of July (6/29-7/3) and hopefully will be avoiding all the partying high school graduates that flock to OC in June.

Rehoboth Beach is half an hour north of Ocean City. In between there and Ocean city are Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, and Fenwick Island (not really an island) all located in Delaware. There are home rentals in most of these places especially south of Rehoboth. Rehoboth has its own boardwalk though it is a smaller resort than Ocean City.

Ocean City/Rohomo/Dewey/Bethany r very expensive - nice accomodation that is. Now if money is no object, then go for it.
Myrtle Beach is the best bang for the buck. or even the OBX...

As the previous poster states, your $$$ goes further in Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks. MB has the edge over OBX, because the latter doesn't have entertainment attractions and dining facilities of the former.

Thank you all for your replies.
Thanks for the link go phillies, I will forward it on to her.
Unfortunately it will have to be Ocean City or close to it, even though I know they are trying to keep it budget friendly. They are coming in from Washington State and staying with family in MD and the other options will be to far of a drive for some of their older family members.

You can always split the drive up..it is kinda long though..8 hours..but so so worth it. And BTW, MB is verrrrrrrry senior friendly....
Actually last year at MB I ran into a family that had driven from Washington State. Oh what a nice long drive they had and boy were they blown away by how warm the water was in August.
If u do end up going, be sure to check out Rusty Rudder up in Dewey for drinks and live entertainment. And take the tram up Rehoboth for shopping and dinner...
Last summer I spent a weekend out at Dewey, paid $310 a night for what I consider a step above a roach motel. The same weekend the babybridge was closed.... And the water was freeeeezing....
For that same $310 a night in MB, I can get a suit with private entrance, two full huge bedrooms, two full baths, full living room with pullout bed, 3 tvs, ocean view, cable, washer & dryer and a full kitchen with utensils plus balcony. And be 5 mins drive from... http://www.broadwayatthebeach.com/

I second the Francis Scott Key---I really enjoyed my time there. The rooms were clean, they had 2 pools, miniature golf, a waterslide/splash area. All-in-all good fun. I think they also have shuttles to OC and maybe Assateague? Can't recall.
I will say, though, that I didn't like the restaurant on property at all. IMHO, overpriced and I didn't care for the food.

I haven't been to Ocean City in years. Staying in hotels that are just outside of Ocean City is a good way to save money. Most of them offer shuttles to and from the boardwalk. However, I really have to support the idea of Myrtle Beach. My family used to go to Ocean City each year. Earlier this decade we went to Myrtle Beach. Now we don't go to Ocean City anymore. It's so much nicer at Myrtle Beach. Sure, the drive sucks, but there's so much more to do down there. It feels more like a vacation.

I know exactly what you mean. My family failed to check the menu outside before going in. The prices were so high that was the only restaurant we've ever left without ordering something. Otherwise, the FSK was nice. It definitely has a very old atmosphere about it.

I don't know what your friend's budget is, but they'd probably do well with a condo- either oceanblock or bayside, if they don't mind crossing Ocean Hwy to get to the beach. I'd recommend one of the smaller condos, they are usually cheaper. Maybe a 3 bedroom? Not sure the ages of the kids, or relationships of the adults. cbvacations has lots of listings if you google it. I'd recommend North OC, farther away from the boardwalk, where it can get really crazy. It may be difficult to find a place that accepts dogs, so make that part of the search criteria when you do a search.
