moving to md area
hey, just wondering if i could get some housing advice. i'm moving to the dc/baltimore area (will be working in laurel, halfway between the two). any specific areas i should look into? i'd like to limit my commute to 30 m or less. i've been to fells point in baltimore and loved it, but it's probably a bit too far. i'm single, 24 y/o, with a budget of 1600-2000 a month. thoughts?

Try Federal Hill or Ridgely's Delight, both neighborhoods in Baltimore but closer to 95 and the Pkwy.

Columbia has quite a few nice areas and apartment complexes, my daughter (a single 27) has lived there several years and likes it. Feel free to DM me for specific locations (I need to touch base with her for recommendations).

Why not live in Laurel so you don't have to commute? It isn't that expensive. Mind you, in my opinion, it isn't as nice as Columbia but, it's all right. There are some places to avoid like Tall Oaks on Maryland 198. You can't tell it from the outside but, that place is a DUMP. The Russett area of Laurel is all right and right next to Maryland 295 which makes it easy to get to either Washington D.C. or Baltimore. There has been some problems with theft there though. There is a new development off of Contee Rd called Winchester however, it must bust your budget.

I second Laurel. With your budget you could probably rent a nice little townhouse. I was just browsing Craigslist and saw many for well under $2,000. I live in Laurel and have personally had no issues with crime. There are large apartment complexes though that should be avoided when looking for a place to live. Most of these are the 70's garden style complexes. I live in the historic district of Laurel where there are many privately owned small apartment buildings that would also be a good option if you want to save money (many are from $850 - $1,000).

How about College Park ? It's a great commute to Laurel (you'd be moving against traffic) there's the nightlife that only a college town can offer, and easy access to the Metro to go into D.C.
