Just moved to Maryland
Hi there,
I just moved to Frederick Co. Maryland and am pulling my hair out trying to figure out everything that needs to be done to register my car in the county. Mostly with finding a place to get the inspection. I am reading absolute horror stories all over the web regarding dishonest inspections and people having to have thousands of dollars of work done to a car to pass inspection. My car is only 4 years old but now I am a nervous wreck about having it inspected. I never had problems passing inspection in Virginia.
Can anyone give suggestions on where to go or any helpful advise? I would really really appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Dawn

I use Kirk at Veirs Auto Repair on E Patrick street next to the fair grounds. I've known him for 26 years, he does repair work on all my family's cars and I've never known him to rip anyone off. I'm sure he does inspections too. Good Luck!

What is wrong with your car that you are worried about it? The MD state inspection is a safety inspection so they check things like brakes, worn out front-end parts, all of your lights have to work, and their can't be any cracks in your windshield... Personally I thought getting a car registered in MD was pretty easy... I have registered a few cars new and old and never failed an inspection...

tercel95 - thank you for saying that!
everyone has been giving me horror stories and I was just easily frightened. It's nice to know there is someone who hasn't had problems! I appreciate your input.

Also in terms of dishonest inspections the only things I have heard of were the opposite of what you're talking about. I.E. Sports cars with no cats, cars with no mufflers, etc...

In my experience, the type of shop you go to determines what things will be marked as problematic. I took one car to two different shops and got two completely different lists of things "wrong" (one shop specialized in exhausts and said it had a pinhole leak in the exhaust needing a $600 muffler replacement. The car was dead quiet and had zero rust AND a new muffler already. The other was a tire shop, and said that the exhaust was fine, but the brakes were needing replacement). I got pissed and sold the car, cheap, and the buyer took it to a completely different shop where it passed with no problems. Go figure.

I had the exact same experience as Merc 20-odd years ago when I moved down here. The safety part passed just fine... but door bushings were bad, the headlights needed adjusting (after which I had to adjust them again so i could see the road), the list goes on. It's also the LAST time I EVER took any vehicle to a dealer that wasn't warranty work. The dealers IMO are much more likely to rip you off than a good country garage.
