Maryland taxes when you own a home
HI
I need some information about buying a home in Maryland. I searched the web and have not found any information. When you buy a home in Md in which you live are you paying, real estate tax/property tax , city taxes and state taxes? I am looking around Princess Anne area, for a home around 120k. So just trying to figure out what to expect taxwise. thanks for all replies.

Property taxes in MD:
the County levies them, if you live in an incorporated municipality you will have a Town property tax, also, but your County property tax will be a bit lower due to what's called a tax differential. That is for the services the Town does instead of the County. The State also has a property tax which is included on your County bill. The County may or may not collect the property taxes for a municipality. Your total property tax will be higher if you live in a municipality. The County taxes include school taxes.
A couple of links, you should be able to find the tax rates for the County and municipality on them:
Maryland Association of Counties
Maryland Municipal League - The Association of Cities and Towns
This one lists properties:

One other thing that you need to know is that Maryland has some of the highest real estate transfer taxes in the country. These taxes are a one-time fee you pay to the state when you buy a piece of property. Several large corporations that were considering a move to Maryland backed out of the deal when they realized the large taxes that their employees would have to pay when they bought homes in Maryland.

And, as a MD resident, your earnings/income will be subject to state and local income tax. Within 30 days of your move, you will be required to register your vehicles in the state, and you must pay the titling tax when you do that.

Property taxes seem high because property values are high in most of MD. My taxes here on a house asessed at $300K are $800 more than my mother's were in WPA on a house assessed at $40K.
