Default Need alternative to Columbia

Moving from Providence with 2 kids and working in Columbia. Like the original concept of Columbia but not in practice. We are moving from an area where we have restaurants, shops, and conveniences within walking distance. The Stoneleigh area of Towson is the most similar we have seen but the commute is questionable. Looked hard at Catonsville but not quite there. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I live in Columbia, and it's great. Catonville schools are questionable. But it you don't want to live in Columbia and can afford the housing prices look into Ellicott City, it's close and the schools are also great.

Where is your commute to? That will play a lot in the advice you get in here as to where to live.

For example, many people like living in and arond Annapolis for the smaller community feel, near the water and if you find the right place you can walk to just about anything.

Most of the more planned areas involve the home owners driving a little bit to get to the shops, etc... in many of the areas in Maryland. I personally am enjoying living in Carroll County now and driving to Columbia or where I wish to shop. I can't walk to much though other than neighbor's houses.

I live right outside of Columbia in Aspenwood Townhomes off Guilford Road. This area of Howard County close to route 1 is very convenient to all of the shopping and recreation of Columbia at a lower cost. Townhomes 300K and under and SFH are still under 400K - also Savage is a nice neighborhood as well.

The Route 1 corridor is definitely not pedestrian-friendly, however.
