Default Looking for Cheapest Place to Rent and Work within an hour of Columbia

Im moving from West Virginia to Maryland to help my siblings take care of my elder mother and father who live in Columbia. I need to find an area which is VERY inexpensive to live since I most likely wont be in there but for a couple years at most. I also will need emplyoyment while in the area. Im unable to buy so will need to rent. Can anyone suggest the cheapest area to rent within an hour or so of Columbia.

I don't have a definitive answer for you but anything bordering the city would probably be cheaper than most other places.

You are probably looking at Baltimore City for the cheapest rent prices. However, I don't know if you want to live there!!!

Could you rent a basement apartment or room from someone? You could probably get a pretty inexpensive rent that way. I found a single room available in Elkridge (very close to Columbia) for $550 a month.

heck, if you're talking an HOUR from Columbia.... you could look up in Hartford county, or possibly better out Rt70 around Frederick or Hagerstown. At least for rentals; job hunting....? that's tough anywhere, no idea what you do.

Since you're willing to travel, I suggest Westminster or Eldersburg/Sykesville. I think there are around 3 apartment rental places in Westminster, a 1BR would run you 800-900. The most expensive is Ridgeview Chase, my mom lived there a while ago and it seemed alright but again is the most expensive. You might want to try Gaither Manor in Sykesville, they are older apartments but VERY cheap for the area- 700 for a 1BR. (website here)

Also, renting a townhouse or private apartment would probably be even cheaper...check local papers and craigslist.
