Default 5 Prince George's County schools on Newsweek's Best Schools List

From the WaPo:

"Newsweek magazine has named five Prince George's County schools to its list of "America's Top Public High Schools."
The schools that made the annual list were Bowie High in Bowie, Charles H. Flowers High in Springdale, Eleanor Roosevelt High in Greenbelt, High Point High in Beltsville and Oxon Hill High in Oxon Hill. They were among 1,500 honored, out of the roughly 27,000 public high schools nationwide, for the extent to which they challenge students to take advanced courses...Eighty-three Maryland public high schools were named to this year's list [an increase of 6 from 2008]."

This is really good news for PG County which has been overshadowed by it's neighbours Montgomery, Howard, and Arlington counties, which have a significant number of top 100 public schools. Oxon Hill is really a shocker considering the area. The school system on a whole still needs some work, but it is very good to see that it is moving in the right direction.

Maryland's public school system overall is considered to be the best in the country (State Public School System Ranked Best in U.S. by 2 Reports - washingtonpost.com) even though Baltimore City and PG schools have been historically viewed as less than stellar.

It really is good news. Baltimore City also had some high schools on the list. It would be great to replicate the successes in the other high schools in PG and Baltimore. The not-so-great part about news like this is that only a portion of the county's children get to experience a successful, well-regarded high school.

Oxon Hill is probably on there because of their Science & Tech program. I'm actually suprised that High Point was on there. I can't speak from personal experience since I didn't go there, but I don't normally hear very good things about that school. Back when I was in high school (at Roosevelt) people would call that school Gun Point.

is exactly the sort of thing that perpetuates generalizations and stereotypes.
