Default Live in Rockville-Work in DC

I am taking a job in DC at the federal triangle. I know nothing about the area. I expect to be there about three years. I have heard Rockville or Gaithersburg is alright to live in. Some questions.

1.What is the commute time from Rockville/Gaithersburg on the train (metro or MARC) to DC at the federal triangle?

2. Commute by car?

3. I have seen condos on Realtor.com in Rockville/Gaithersburg for about 200K, are these in an OK location? I don't need anything extravagant but don't want to live next to a crack house.

4. If I rent, any suggestions for about $1500 a month or less? One wife, no kids, so don't need alot of space. Not looking for some big corporate facility type apartment.

I know this is asking a lot but I am willing to provide any information on San Diego, CA. as I am an expert and life long resident.

About an hour by train (from the platform) when the RED line is running without incident.

By car, an hour or less depending on travel time. One lil fender bender (occurs daily) will easily push you over an hour, and parking is expensive. I currently pay $18 bucks a day.

Actually, it only takes a little over half an hour from platform to platform during rush hour. You can go to wmata.com and use the trip planner to plug in your exact departure time and it will give you an exact arrival time. It will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 35+ minutes.
