Personally, I think Clinton is a decent area to live in. I live in the northern part of PG so maybe someone who lives closer can add some info, but here's what I can tell you about it regarding your questions:
Schools
Like I said, I grew up/live in northern PG so I'm not very familiar with the schools in Clinton. PG public schools in general don't have the best reputation, but that doesn't mean that they're all bad. Off the top of my head, I'd guess that kids that live in Clinton are zoned to either Friendly HS or Gwynn Park HS. GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community is a good site for reviewing schools in the area.
Churches
I'm not religious whatsoever so I couldn't tell you anything about churches in the area.
Neighborhoods
It's a suburban area, so it's mostly single-family houses, maybe some townhouses. I may be wrong, but I can't think of any apartment complexes in Clinton. The further south you go (away from DC), the more rural the area becomes.
Traffic
Branch Avenue is one of the major roads in the area, and is also a major route into DC, so depending on the time of day, the traffic might be pretty bad.
Crime
Since it is a middle class/upper middle class area, Clinton is pretty safe. Some people on here like to portray the entire county as a war zone, but use common sense and you'll be fine. It's not an area where there are drug dealers out on the corners, etc. That being said however, the further north you go on Branch Ave, the more crime there is. I would much rather live in Clinton than Temple Hills or Hillcrest Heights.
Diversity
It's not very diverse in the sense that there are a mix of a lot of races. The 2007 Census estimate says that Clinton is about 80% black, 15% white, and 5% other.

Surrattsville High School is where most kids from Clinton go for 9-12.

Some parts are more upscale than others in Clinton. There are single family subdivisions off Route 5 and off of Woodyard Road that look nice. I remember touring a house in a neighborhood that looked nice and quiet. There are pockets of houses and townhouses with some rowdy people, mainly in the older parts, from what I saw. I haven't heard much about the elementary schools; a former colleague spoke well of one that his son attended (I can't remember the name). Parts of Clinton have a rural feel.

In the 1980s the Grace Brethren Church and Christian School that used to be in Temple Hills moved to Clinton, buying the old Surrattsville Jr. High. It's a solid evangelical church (I went there in the 1970s and 1980s and my friend's dad is still music minister there). I lived in Clinton in the 70s and 80s and it was a nice place to live then, but the public schools were pretty crappy which is why I went to GBCS.

I've heard good things about Grace Brethren Christian School. For public school info, see www.greatschools.net and www.schooldigger.com .

You will be fine in Clinton. It's a nice area and I enjoyed it. I stayed off of old alexander ferry road. The schools are something that you might have to check on. I lived in Clinton for about 8 years and I went to Surrattsville High. In my opinion it wasn't exactly world class education, but things could have changed. While I didn't think it was the best, I didn't turn out to be a failure, but that was due to my determination to succeed not the schools. Just remember that. Great Schools.net is a great place to check on. But do not become so focused on the test scores, because they change every year. That's just with any school system.
As far as diversity. There really isn't a whole lot. P.G. as you already know is majority black county and Clinton doesn't stray away from that fact. This is not to say there aren't different races mixed in, but just basically saying, this isn't Northern Va or Montgomery county. If anything Northern P.G. has a more diversity than the rests of the county.

With the exception of the schools, Clinton is a very good area to live in. Grace Brethren is an excellent choice if private schools are an option. I don't know what the population of Grace Brethren is like now, but it use to be diverse. Clinton itself, as others have stated is not really diverse.
Cheltenham is one of the best areas of Clinton.

Most kids (9-12) in Cheltenham now attend Frederick Douglass High School with a few attending Gwynn Park High School.
