Default Please HELP!! Relocating to MD OR VA

I am working over seas in Iraq and I have decided to come home, to the US, next month. I am relocating to the MD OR VA area but I am not sure where to live. It will be my aunt, her 6 year old son and my self. I am seeking an area that is diverse in culture and safe place to live. My concern is providing a good area and education for the 6 year old. I will also be seeking work and the administrative / Human resource department. Any assistance would really really help. I am going crazy trying to decide where to go. Oh, No more than about a 45-50 minute drive from Laurel would be nice. There is a church there that I would like to attend every so often. Thanks every one.

Oh....does any one know anything about Germantown???

Do you have any particular preferences about price range, proximity to DC, or other factors? Whether or not you want/need to own a car and tolerance for commuting are also important factors to consider.

Germantown is a MD suburb about 45 minutes to an hour outside of central DC by car. Many people who live there drive to Shady Grove Metro in Gaithersburg and then commute by train into DC. It is a quiet suburban area with lots of no-outlet subdivisions and plenty of chain stores to cater to all the folks living there. It's far less expensive than many of the closer-in suburbs. That said, other than strip malls, groceries, and homes, it's not overhwhelmingly exciting. Just kind of a nice suburb. The closest employers will be in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Bethesda. If you are looking to work in DC, you might consider living closer-in to save yourself some commuting time.

The best schools are in Montgomery County, MD; Fairfax County, VA; and Arlington County, VA. You might want to run some real estate searches for those counties and see what pops up that you like.

Where are you going to be working (city)?
How much can you afford?
Do you need public transit to work or driving?
