Default best way to commute from Germantown to White Oak?

What is the best way to go from Germantown to White Oak near the Naval Weapon Center? Is there any public transportation available without having to transfer 3-4 times? I-270 and I-495 are pretty crowded in rush hour.

Thanks.

in several years you will have the ICC to assist you (mind you, it will be a toll road) but for now this is how I did it when working in Germantown, living in Frederick, and going to visit my parents over in east Silver SPring.

I worked right off 355 at 118 so I'd go down 355 and make a left on Rt. 124 like I was going to Lakeforest Mall, and then hang a right onto MidCounty highway. Then I stayed on that until it dead ended into Shady Grove road. Made a left and went up to the next major intersection, which was muncaster mill road.

Made a right here and took it all the way out until it dead ended into Rt 28/Norbeck.
hung a left and stayed on Rt. 28 until it came to Rt. 650 New Hampshire Avenue.
Hung a right here and then a left onto Briggs chaney.

YOU would continue to go straight on New Hampshire until you cross under Rt. 29 and hit the Naval Observatory.

*****************

THe straight highway option is to tkae 270south to 495 headed towards baltimore and stay on the capital beltway until you take the exit for White Oak/New Hampshire Avenue Rt. 650 North. Go a few miles and white oak/observatory will be on your right.

Thanks for the info. How long did it usually take you? A friend just started working in the Naval Center, and she didn't like the 50-minute drive from Germantown in the morning.

She's fortunate that it only takes 50 mins. She must be leaving early.... . Twice this week it took me close to 50 mins just to get to the spur from Gtown due to accidents though...

You don't need to hang the left anymore. They finished the connection between 28 and 198 (No more dead end). Just go straight to NH ave.

I think it probably took me about 45-50 minutes as well, when I would leave my school after work and head there around 3:30ish?? I rarely did the morning route, maybe once or twice when I was taking courses down at Bowie and stayed at my parents overnight, but the few times I did it (and this would be to get to work at 8 AM), I know I left by 6:30 to be on the safe side. Since it's all back roads, one mishap and you are stuck in traffic for who knows how long.

The ICC WILL help eleviate that, I hope.
