Smile Pros & Cons of Takoma Park MD?

Hello all,

I just joined today So I have lived in Rockville, Md for a while. I have been to Takoma Park several times and really love the atmosphere. But I know visiting an area and living there are 2 different things.

So..For those of you that live or have lived there, what can you tell me about it? I'm also curious about the public schools. How are they in comparison to the ones in Rockville? My son will be going into 5th grade and a good education is priority.

Thanks,

Kat

Takoma Park is a nice little area, but because it hugs the PG Cty border, that means the schools aren't as good and shopping is limited.

I think the elementary school there is decent, but scores are lower b/c of the diversity..piney branch ES. Montgomery Blair is probably the high school and if your son can get into the magnet program, he should be fine. But, it's a huge school.

Takoma Park is also a very hilly area with small homes.

I disagree. While I do not live in Takoma Park, my office has been here for nearly 10 years.

Takoma Park, MD is in Montgomery County and has some of the best schools in the county. The area is quite diverse and is often considered the Berkeley of the East. I also think that the downtown Takoma area on the MD side is supposedly undergoing a revitalization. Have heard there are plans to open a couple of white tablecloth type of restaurants along Carroll.

With that said, Takoma DC is a bit sketchy. 10 years ago, I wouldn't walk to Metro at night from work but nowadays, I'm very comfortable doing so.
