Default Stay away from PG County!

Everybody keeps telling me this, yet I keep finding areas that I think myself and my family will like and many end up being in PG County. Laure, Bowie etc.

Is this county really that bad or is it just getting a bad rap?

You will hear some people say that PG county is awful and some that will say it is great... The truth is that as a whole it lies somewhere in the middle... There are good and bad areas although when compared to other counties in the state there are slightly more bad than good areas...

The areas you specifically mentioned like Laurel and Bowie are actually pretty decent... Just don't venture to far out of the way because its not that hard to end up in a rough area... Laurel and Bowie are not bad but they do put you closer to some of the more crime-ridden areas than say some areas in Montgomery county and most in Anne Arundel or Calvert County...

My first recommendation to people moving to the area that aren't set on the city life is Calvert County... It is affordable and if you live in the northern end the commute to DC is still doable...

bowie is ok but if you have children PG schools as a whole are not that great so you may want to look into the schools. housing is expensive and IMO crime is high.

I live in both Laurel and Bowie and never had any problems whatsoever. Just stay away from bad areas like any town in the world.

In PG, sure some parts are better than others. Also, some parts that people think are bad may not be that bad. There are inner beltway communities that are quiet, and outside beltway communities that don't live up to the hype. I personnally like Bowie, parts of Laurel and parts of Upper Marlboro, as well as parts of Beltsville, College Park, University Park, Cheverly, Adelphi, Fort Washington, Accokeek, etc. There's something for everyone in terms of neighborhood character. Plus much of the County still has trees standing! My only real concern is the schools. One of my kids is just going to have to go the private route this year. I've found PG to be an overall very good place to live.

It doesn't really help if the rough area is just down the street...it's inevitable.

Landover, Capitol Heights, Seat Pleasant, Fairmont Heights, Suitland and Forestville should be avoided. too many "hoods" in those areas which has contributed to crime. Riverdale, Hyattsville, Mt. Rainer, New Carrollton, Cheverly, and Chillium are also bringing in crime rates. I pretty much just named most of PG county. you should just avoid it.
