The County is rich, not the majority of the people in it LOL
Private schools are about $1000 + in PG as well. If there is an affordable private school in PG, I probably wouldn't be sending my kids to it!

To compare PG County to Philly is a bit drastic, Philly is a city...crime is expected there, PG is a county. I know plenty of police officer for PG county and it is a very bad area. There are nice parts, but honestly what is the point in investing in a home in PG county when no one even looks there because they hear all this negative publicity about the area. If you drove thru and thought it to be nice, why not stay there for a couple of days. I have several of friends that are trying to get out of PG county because of the gangs, rapes, theft, murders....

I also do animal rescue in Maryland and the main site of the rescue is in PG and the people I've met there are far from rich and most of the applications for dogs there can't even afford the adoption donation, so we won't place with them. So that's how I got the impression that it was one of the poorer counties. I always relate the more wealthy counties with Montgomery and Howard...but like I said I could be wrong...LOL

Wow, IRISHMOM, your'e way out there. Okay, I'm extremely well traveled and lived in a number of Areas in the DC metro, overseas, in the Northeast, and in the southwest. I also lived in Prince Georges County for a time and i'm i would have to say from personal experience I HATED and still do. I'm not a fan. However, Prince Georges as an overall county is in no way poor or close to it. Let me throw out a few facts. The average Median income in the nation is just under 35k's a year. Hell, i'm a college student and i make that much at my internship, so i couldn't imagine feeding kids on that. Anyway, I digress. PG County is at around 55k least and 60k median, so the county is a middle class county overall and like most counties whether its fairfax, montgomery, or howard the majority of the people that live in the county are middle class. Yes, as in every other county there are a small portion of wealthy, or upperclass families in PG county. However, just like in Fairfax, Montgomery, and Howard, that is not the majority. The majority of families in the DC metro area's are in the lower or middle class. Yes, there is a higher percentage of wealthy or uppper middle class families in fairfax or montgomery ,but they are by no means a great overall representation of the county. PG has its poorer areas, which are crime ridden and extremely dangerous, but if you were to drop a pet off in one of the more affluent areas once you got over the fact, that the upper class and wealthy individuals in PG county are black you'd find them no different then their white, black, or asian, upper middle class couterparts in other counties in the DC area. I mean you are obviously a lower middle class or middle class at best, so the off shot comments on PG are a little stricking considering, that Howard county has a number of poor areas, that equal PG's poor areas, as does Montgomery (which are equally as crime ridden) as well as Fairfax. I mena if you're dropping off pets in Landover hills yes, you're going to encounter poor individuals that cannot take care of their pets, but if that's your job to pick up endagerd pets. Well, we can all put two and two together the majority of people that cannot afford to take car of their pets are going to be poor and that goes for any county. I think your opinion has less to do with PG county and more to do with your racial basis for the people that inhabit the county. Yes, i'm a black person and i do not like PG county nor would i ever live there, but i also wouldn't leave in certain "redneck" parts of Howard county as you have the same low class trash there, but they're white instead of black, but they have those same crappy low class attitudes, that make it hard to live around. Anyway, as far as comparing PG to Phila. You all have valid points on the crime in PG. It is unheard of for a "suburburban" comminuty to have such an outlandesh crime level. Also i agree the school system sucks, but in genral the american public school system sucks, so you should be educating your kids in private school to begin with assuming you actually care about their education.

What does being lower or middle class have to do with anything? PG is just a bad County, no matter what's going on in the other counties I'd prefer them over PG anyday. I can deal with minor annoyances, not life threatening. And your comment about "assuming you actually care about their education" Private school is expensive, and unless you live with 3 or 4 roommates it's hard to afford. I care baout my son's education but he goes to a public school. The quality of education you seem to refer to can only be found in China.

RoadTripGirl (noticed i spelled girl correctly). I'm not sure why i'm wasting my time even responding to you. Perhaps i'm bored with studying for finals and preparing for exams, but i digress. Anyway, PG overall I agree is not a great county to live in especially if you are upper class. If you're poor, lower, or middle class and can tolerate the crime levels and poor schooling system go right ahead and live there. However, i keep seeing people say live in St. Mary's county which is total trash as well, so why would someone trade one lump of crap for another? Anyway as for affording private school there are a number of options for someone in your position? hehe Although i'm not sure your position, but there are plenty of "affordable" private school in the DC area. If you cannot afford to send your child to private school i would opt for the next best thing or in some cases a school system that is comparable. The only school system in the DC area that is public and comparable to private school is the Fairfax county school system.

Thanks pwright1, howsitgoingdude3 is totally stuck up. For your information, I don't live in PG County any longer nor will I ever move back. I also went to high school and college in PG County (UMCP) as well as pursuing a higher degree. I am not poor, lower class, or stupid, and my son goes to a school district far far away from PG County. In my opinion, anything south is horrible. I'd opt for north Maryland or out of Maryland altogether. And so what, you can spell... yawn... Please, don't waste anymore of your precious time with your silly responses.

Irishmom: You are so wrong about Pg county and I hate it when people like you think just because the county is mostly black that means the entire county is poor and that is wrong for you to think. One of the reason why I think pg county schools was bad but getting alot better is because couple years ago it was not develoe as Howard or Montgomery but Howard and Montgomery have a run for their money because Pg is right behind them and will eventuall I think pass them. Once the new homes and new communities get completely build we will all see a big difference. I know if you want to move in my community in Upper Marlbor Maryland if you cannot afford a 1.2 million dollar home you might look some where else and its nothing but homes in that price range that been build in Bowie, Upper Marlboro, BrandyWine, Fort Washington so with more high income homes comes high income families and that will change the county a whole lot. I knoew in my community if you are not making $200,00 a year you might as well forget it. I live close to the Historic part of Upper Marlboro. Builders are buying up ever bit of land and building million dollar homes. I donot have to live with the white people to live a safe wealthy happy life where my husband and I can play golf in our community go for a walk on our community walk trail, go swimming and play tennis inour commuinty. take a drive in Bowie, Upper Marlboro,Fort Washington, Brandy Wine and you would sell your home and move to Pg as well as. So donot judge. I am a very young successful black female and I live a excellent live in the perfect commuinty and area. Every county People have its problem but it depends on where you live in the county. People talk about Pg county but if you pay attention to the news its only ina cretain area of the county such as Capitaol heights, Distict heights, I have yet tho hear of a murder or any crime on the news that happen in Bowie, Upper Marlboro,Fort Washington,Brandywine,Clinton. So plese if you are talking bad about Pg county donot judge the entire county because pg have alot of black or other race but mostly black millionaires are wealthy people. And all of the million dollar homes black people are buying these homes.

Mom21 is on a distinguished road
I still believe that MANY of you are influenced by the media regarding your opinion of PG County. I actually LIVED in the county until 2.5 years ago, and everybody is NOT trying to leave. If that were true, you would be seeing more vacant houses than other parts of the metro area. I just think you really have to familiarize yourself with a place before you can come to a conclusion. I drove to St. Mary's County looking for a home before I moved and the VAST MAJORITY of what I observed caused me to look elsewhere. Then there is Charles County, where I live now, which has "surface" appeal, but once I moved here, I found that it ain't so great either. I'd be estatic to move out of here but I'm not going to spend my life moving around in search of Utopia. I have yet to identify a viable alternative. If I could afford PG county, I would move back there.

PG is the richest majority African-American county in the US and one of the top 100 overall, IIRC.
