This is my first post on this topic but I have been closely following it since the summer. PG County is like any other county in the nation. It has poor sections, working class sections, middle class and affluent gated communities. I think people in MD like to bash PG because it's bashable (if that's a word). Right now, the affluent parts of PG County is a bedroom community at best.
The inner beltway areas have been neglected by the county for decades. PG needs to stop blaming DC crime spillover for their problems. DC is quiclky gentrifying and building up. PG needs to do the same, but instead of reinvesting back into the county, the government has gotten in bed with these housing developers who don't care about the county at all and want to make a quick buck. The county seriously needs a central business district over a Metro station. Look at what the Metro has done for Arlington's Rosslyn to Ballston Corridor. PG needs a downtown like Bethesda. National Harbor is a start in the right direction. People's opinions and feelings about certian areas are subjective. I have friends who live in NOVA and wonder why would anyone live in Anne Arundel County. Seriously, they bash the place like its Mayberry. I always take up for my MD counties. But, thats's their opinion. As a whole some of these post are rash generalizations. |

I expect derogatory comments thrown my way once in a while. Our two races' comingled history is a very sad and brutal one. You can't get rid of centuries of victimization and racism. However, we are not our ancesters. But, for some reason, it really hurt me to hear someone say that I, because I was born white (no fault of my own), was not wanted. People fought long and hard for desegregation and here you are saying whites get out. Us blacks don't want you here and we want to be segregated again. Maybe some whites (not all) don't accept the changes, but you aren't either. You aren't accepting integration. Your statements are the same generalizations as others. You are generalizing that all whites don't want to be around blacks and that all blacks want whites to move away. You know, we're not all bad. We all don't have the mythical white privilege I keep hearing about. Some of us make good neighboors, co-workers, and friends. Then there are some that are just hopeless jerks. But that's not just whites. That's people in general. Last edited by kjg1963; 12-20-2007 at 10:31 AM. |

I was looking in Washingtonian Magazine and they had a list of the 100 best places to eat, not one was in PG County. With it being one of the richest counties in the nation, you would assume it had tons of great restaurants.

Pg government is finally getting it together. In the spring of 08 we will have plenty of upscale restaurants and other attractions.

You raise a good point. When blacks self segragate themselves they give up a lot of privlidges and quality of life issues, that predomintely white affluent counties do not grapple with. For instances Higher Taxes (to support the massive migration of poorer blacks, that middle and upper middle class blacks have to support) Sub Par Community Services (bad policing, public works, public schooling etc) Fine Dining (luxury shopping or fine dinning is all but out of the picture) Drop in Housing prices (means a drop in overall black wealth) It is part of the cost of self segregating. It is not different than forced segregation by whites years ago. My opinion is that "affluent" blacks could do a lot better and live a lot more comfortable lives sprinkling themselves out in predomintely white affluent environments. (They would get better public schooling for thier children, lower taxes, better community services, better policing, better dining options, better shopping options, higher property values (would enjoy the same increases affluent whites receieve, etc) Again i said affluent so crime is pratically non-existent even in PGC affluent areas, so a reduction in crime would not be a benefit it would go withoutsaying lol. The other issue seems to me if people in the county wanted mroe fine dinning and luxury shopping they probably could get it. If a large enough group of concerned citizens along with the county executive got together and put pressure on a few of these "upscale chains" and asked them to move and setup business in the county you might get a few of these stores. From an economic stand point blacks spend more of thier hard earned savings than whites, because they tend not to invest as much etc, so the argument from PGC would seem to me to be very convincing based on black consumer trends. Merceds sells more cars per capita to blacks in the 100-150k range than it does to whites who have the same income etc. I think most of these stores avoid PGC because of crime. If i was an exectuive i'd move my store to PGC as i think the benefit of profiting off of black dollars far outweighs the level of crime that could occur at my store. Anyway questions for the board. What is the current tax rate on luxury stores and other sorts of luxury commercialization? Is PGC a tax friendly place for companies to set-up business? If residents do not want low brow Applesbee's and Ruby Tuesdays filling every resturante choice within the county then they should petition it. It is just really sad that the "affluent" blacks and whites in PGC have to suffer because of the poorer blacks and whites that inhabit the inner beltway. The problem is that i have never noticed PGC attempt to drastically change or challenge the image being presented by the local news etc. PGC reminds me of Brazil there's such a large difference in the have's and the have nots in the county. The black affluent live in gated communities send their kids to private school etc. While the black poor, lower, and middle have to suffer through terrible schools etc.... If someone took a median income of some of the towns in PGC verses other towns in Maryland they'd find that the outerbeltway areas are some of the "wealthiest" areas in the state of Maryland while the inner beltway areas, which are predominitely lower middle class and poor are some of the poorest areas in the state. PGC is really the story of two different counties. It's sort of like Alphretta, GA, but with affluent black people instead of affluent whites. The northern part of the county is rich and predomintely white and the southern part of the county is black and predomintely poor and lower middle class. Its funny how most stories make this distinction, because it fits teh stereotype to a T. White and affluent on one end and poor and black on the other. However PGC is poor black on one end and affluent black on the other. Does not fit the white liberal media stereotype nor the black militant stereotype could be a dangerous image to show the masses.
