Terrapin: It seem to me that you are very judemental. How can you judge an entire county. Your statement was Pg county is ghetto by you making such an statement you are calling every single house hold,Family, individual ghetto. Are you not ready for a change? Are you not seeing that minority are on the sam elevel as whites? Terrapin with you soon to graduate you will have bosses of all race. If you do decide to stay in Maryland you will find out majority of African American Executive,Business Owners,Lawyers,Doctors, etc working sucessful live in Pg county. I know for one my community an surrounding is far from Ghetto.
For you calling pg ghetto is someone saying Cumberland,Hagerstown,St Mary county are Trailer trash, hillbilly, rednecks counties which no one can say because you can never judge an intire county just like you cannot judge an entire county.

Try to live in philly where there is real crime, real poverty, really bad schools, and I can reassure you that you'd all be thankful for what PG county has to offer. Now saying that; PG does have its problems, as does all places, but come on people you all make it seem like beirut, and its NOT!!
Its seems that PG county suffers from what I like to call well-to-do kids trying to be bad, "fronting" so to speak; beacuse they think that's what being AA is all about. I can bet you any amount of money that if these kids spent time in a real "hood" they would'nt last 2 days. So to conclude my rant appreciate the good you have here in PG. and try to change the bad, don't run away, because its not all that bad! Just this weekend 20 people were shot in philadelphia, and out of those 20; 11 died. How's that for bad.

How bad is it? How many murders are there every year?

The reason why I personally despise PG county is because of most of the black citizens' buy-in to anti-intellectualism/gangster life, as well as how they treat blacks who want success through legitimate means worse than criminals. When I attended high school in the county, I was one of the primary targets for social biasness. Those who were lacking in academical progress were esteemed by the general school population. Hell, at one point, I tried to address this issue to the school faculty. They saw it as me having some sort of social problem, and tried to literally expel me. Luckily, I was able to transfer to a less crappier school within the county. Whenever I walk in the street, I ALWAYS receive bigoted and threatening stares. This is something I rarely come across in some of the most whitest neighborhoods. As for the original poster, I say this: as long as the voices and actions of ignorant and deviant people out-shadow those of the intellectual and good-hearted citizens, I will always see PG County as the fascist, socialist, living he!! of Maryland.
As for Terrapin2212, I'd agree with RFMD that she's one of these run-of-the-mill asian girls who hate minorities (specifically blacks and Latinos) in order to get brownie points and assimilate to the "master race." Unfortunately, the atrociousness of her perspective is pretty common in UMCP (and all throughout Maryland), and are one of the reasons behind why I despise the school and the state so much!!!

Fairfaxian, wow, dude, you hit the bump right on the proverbial head!!! This is exactly why as a *Black American male (wasn't born and never been to Africa) who at one time briefly lived in PG county I hated it and to this day I refuse to step foot in the hell hole. Iscalder Yes, there are a few upper class intellectual blacks, but they are extremely outnumbered and overshadow by the lower middle class and poor blacks that buy into that HIP HOP BS, that is paraded around as authentically being black or "keeping it real" Not that I’m into habit of quoting comedians, but Chris Rock said it best "Yea, keeping it real, real freaking dumb" and that's what PG does!! Also, most educated affluent blacks in the DC area, that did not attend an HBC, refuse to live in PG County. Most blacks that attended elite Northeast schools or elite schools and colleges outside of the state would never live there or raise kids here for that reason. (This is to the Icalder bs) I can give you a list of the most accomplished blacks in the DC area and not one of them has chosen to ever reside in PG county, so stop saying that all the blacks executives and lawyers want to live there, because that is not remotely true. Yes, there are a handful here and there that have decide to live in PG and set up companies there, but they are not the majority and never will be.
Oh as for the Terrapin person they are just a loser and not very well educated. I mean she's/he's a minority that believes if she attacks another minority group somehow that will make her look more favorable or better herslelf/hisself esteem. No matter what when he/she goes to sleep at night and wakes up in the morning she'll/he'll always be an Asian. Anyway, considering i lived in Fairfax, it's funny he should call PG ghetto; the FOBS that get off the boat and live in Fairfax are equally as dangerous as the thugs that roam PG.

homogenity
It isn't just wealthy blacks in PG, btw. There are quite a few of us well-off whites here in
http://www.city-data.com/city/West-Laurel-Maryland.html It's funny - if i didn't read the Post and just extrapolated the County based on what I see and experience in my "town," I would never know why people thought so ill of PG. I still don't know why people think that a 500 sq mile jurisdiction is homogeneous (i.e all bad or all good or all dumb or all rich or all anything). To put that number in perspective, DC is 68 square miles, and is vastly different, depending on what neighborhood you're in.

Please, don't strain yourself to convince people of what should be an extremely elementary thought. WHAT!!!??!!! The entire prince georges county isn't bad? Crime, although it happens EVERYWHERE, is often concentrated in certain areas of prince georges county? WHAT? EDUCATED PEOPLE (myself included) actually MOVE TO AND LIVE IN prince georges county? Now that's jus' plain ole crazy talk!!
I think we could all agree that people create their own opinions and 'bias' based upon their personal experiences. For some, the burgerly of a cousin who lives there is enough of a deterrent. To others, bad educational experiences are enough. I wouldn't move right into the worse neighborhood...but surely there are areas where the community is involved in their neighborhoods, schools and local politics. Believe you me...it exists.

howsitgoingdude3: What is wrong with you instead of you helping your own people who needs help you are on here agreeing with Terrapin don't you see she just doesnot like any black person in Pg county meaning she more then likely do not like you either because of your color. It so funny i thought America was over the race thing and I guess not why not judge each person by their own actions instead of judging the entire county base upon a very small population. Crimes are every where and just because someone choose to dress a certain way does not mean they are a gangsta. Majority of the gangsta wear suits. teh real gangsta in America are the America government and they wear suits every single day.
I donot think America is ready for change we have one of the most intelligent African AMerican presidential canditate which is so wonderful to but not to others because he is been threat and he is the first to have secret service this early in the election and its all because of his color. It is so sad that people like you Terrapin cannot look pass skin color.

No, the bill in Congress is dead for the time being. The crooks in Congress are now trying again to compromise on this terrible bill. If the people of this country continue to hound their senators and the president that "amnesty" for 12 million lawbreakers is not the answer I believe we the people can stop this bill and force our "representatives" to pass legislation that benefits legal American citizens of all races.

You know what's funny?
I grew up in inner city D.C. for 16 years and lived in PG for the last 14 years. I've attended both D.C. and P.G. public schools, HD Woodson and Forestville High Schools. Earned a Masters Degree and make an excellent salary. With that I LOVE PG COUNTY! You will not find this level of concentrated african-american affluence anywhere in the country. Any person (especially black) that refuses to set foot back in a county as such is dare I say it, a straight sell out! There are very poor people in PG as there are in every county or place in the U.S. Will you not step foot back in those counties? I was a parole officer in Fairfax County, Virginia for 5 years aka the richest county in America and they have some of the most dangerous neighborhoods I have ever experienced. I have been to every hood in D.C. and some of Fairfax is worst. It seems many on this board have lived very sheltered lives and take whatever they hear or experience in very short doses and create their own ficticious generalized reality. "I did a few pet rescuses so the whole counties poor", "I go to UMD and we all scared" (of what?). Those same UMD folks will head down to DC to party in and through some truly crazy places. "I lived there a couple years and wont go back", please, trust we don't want your sellout ass back! I caught that little snipe at HBCs.
For those of you who don't understand the true meaning of poor, try the eastern shore of maryland like somerset county. That will put the breaks on any talk of PG and poor.
Oh yeah, funny thing is I have to move to freaking Newark, NJ for work! I'll miss PG and its abundunce of attractive and educated sistas and alll those who believe in making what they have better by not running at the first real or perceived sign of trouble or difficulty. Hopefully I'll be back to the area one day soon. Somebody save me a nice 3 story split-level in Bowie. Well, got to go stock up on my go-go collection before I leave.

Iscalder and everyone here....I never mentioned black people in any of my posts. There are many respectable African Americans and African immigrants living in Montgomery, Baltimore, Howard, and Fairfax counties. Ghetto people are only a subset of the black and Hispanic population.
My biggest thing about PGC is the illegal immigrants. My friend was robbed at gunpoint by illegals and my mom was in an accident with an illegal who had no insurance and who has since been deported back to Honduras. Illegals are ILLEGAL. They do not have a rigth to live here, much less cheat the system and get welfare without paying taxes, forming gangs, and dealing drugs.
Illegal immigrants are responsible for a major chunk of violence crime in PG County, Maryland, and in the nation as a whole. Wherever illegals live, there is crime, poverty, gang warfare and a lack of respect for authority and a lack of pride in the community, people littering everywhere, spray painting graffiti everywhere. And yes, one last thing is that the illegals refuse to Americanize. They form their own subcultures and hate anyone who is not from their country or anyone from their country who is not a thug or a gangbanger.
Illegals refuse to learn to speak English. They hate our country and our customs and culture but love our money, a lot of which is sent back to their home nations.

If you go Langley Park (or even Wheaton), it feels more like El Salvador than the U.S.
And I'm informed enough to know that the illegals don't represent all or even most Salvadorans and Mexicans. The border jumpers come from the poorest, least educated, trashiest portion of their home countries' populations. I don't have anything against Mexico or El Salvador as nations...only the individuals illegals who are coming into our country and causing problems.
