Another question...what is considered a reasonable amount of rent for a 1 bedroom in Waldorf, Upper Marlbor, etc? Maybe I just need a healthy dose of reality, because I'm certainly not finding what I'm looking for. Is it impossible to find a one bedroom for less than $1,100 a month that allows pets and is in a safe area with a full kitchen, bathroom, separate entrance, etc? I'm beginning to feel like I'm going to have to give up a huge quality of life to take this job.

I live in Fort Washington and I have seen horse stables and home owners with horses on their property in Ft. Washington, Accokeek and in Upper Marlboro. Take a look in the rural parts of these areas. One of the trainers at the YMCA in Ft. Washington has a horse stable in Ft. Washington. He brought a pony to one of the YMCA family day events for kids to ride one day.

Welcome to MD, this place is pretty much only for the rich... It really doesn't get much cheaper than $1000/month unless you are just renting a room or something like that...

Try private owners renting condos or small homes...though it may still be tough. I have a condo that I rent out in Oxon Hill near Nat'l Harbor for $1350/month and I allow pets but I have a longtime tenant. Some people rent theirs in the same complex for $900-$1100 a month and also allow pets though they may have fewer upgraded appliances and flooring etc. Small homes and townhouses near there rent for about $1500/month. Not sure about the Upper Marlboro and Waldorf rental rates but this may give you an idea.
Sharing a single family home with a roommate could work if open to that....maybe one can take the upper level and one the lower level if there is a furnished basement apartment. Or maybe you can find a basement apartment in a nice single family home with a yard for the pets.

Thanks for the list of farms. That will come in handy. I was in the area this weekend and visited two on that list that were SCARY! But hopefully one of the others will pan out.

Check out the equiery (www.equiery.com) for listings of rentals with horse board. You may be able to find a guest house on a horse farm in AA or PG counties for reduced rent (if you are willing to do some horsey chores in your spare time). We had tenants who payed almost nothing for room and (horse) board in exchange for the ocassional am feed or weekend horse-sitting...
