Default what is the commute like from Columbia to Gaithersburg?

My husband and I are looking to relocate. We are wondering what the commute is like if we lived in Columbia and drove to Gaithersburg (hours of our job is 8am-6pm. Thank you in advance for any input you may have.

That commute is going to be bad. You will likely have to take 29S, 495W, then 270N. You're going to go with the traffic for most of your commute which means it will take you about 1-1.5 hours just to go one way. I would not recommend it. If you *need* to live in Columbia and you're willing to put up with the commute, then you do get some relief once they build the ICC. That highway (toll) will connect Columbia to Gaithersburg directly which will lower your commute down to about 1/2 hour. Of course you'll have to wait until 2012 for that...

Why not just live in Gaithersburg? It's comparable to Columbia, and in some ways, better in my opinion.

You can go around the traffic if you go the back way. 32 to 108 and take 108 in deppending on where u want to go. I usually take 108 to Britondam road follow that up to new hampshire. there is a Y after sunshine and if stay to the left it will drop you out on 124. either way is going to take you 35-45 mins.

I would take 32 to 108 to Bowie Mill Rd (other side of Georgia Ave.) to Muncaster Mill rd to Shdy grove rd or keep going to 124 and go left. That is probably the best route, but will take 40 minutes or more.

Not too bad if you take the back roads, then again it depends on exactly where in Columbia and Gaithersburg you're.

Thank you very much for your responses!! As far as living in Gaithersburg, I really do not know much about it. I am looking for an area that is family friendly, safe, and with a nice community feel. Also convenient in terms of access to shopping and restaurants.

We are looking to relocate to an area that would be a reasonable commute to our jobs in Gaithersburg. I have heard that Columbia is very safe and family friendly. The other place I have heard good things about is Olney.

For Gaithersburg, check out The Kentlands. There is a recent thread about them. Probably will be exactly what you're looking for. Any stores they don't have there will be reasonably close by in Rockville, Gaithersburg, or Germantown.

I don't think going from Colombia is really that bad by area standards. I used to commute from Elkridge to Rockville for a 9-5 job and it usually took 50-60 min.
