I would encourage you to look at University Park, MD. Located just south of College Park, in P.G. County on the green line. My huband works at Farragut North and has a commute of about 40-45 minutes. UP (as we call it) is an oasis much like Mayberry. We have our own town government, police, public works. Our elementary school is very highly regarded and is within walking distance for town residents. Prices for houses start around 350-400K. You could also look into living in the south end of College Park (a neighborhood called Calvert Hills), in Hyattsville in a neighborhood called University Hills, in Riverdale Park (only certain areas) or in the actual city of historic Hyattsville.

We have an amazing sense of community here and an active civic association.

Drive on over this weekend and look around. The center of town is the intersection of Underwood and Queen's Chapel.

Montgomery and PG are the only real metro accessible counties in MD.
