Default Houston, TX to Maryland

My company has asked me to relocate to Maryland. Job is located is in Upper Marlboro not to far from Andrews Air Force base. What area would be the best to move to with my wife and 11 year old daugther? With the potential for my wife to find a job HR Manager. Also a great school system.

Thanks,

What is your budget? Are you prepared for the ridiculous cost of living in MD?

That being said I would recommend Calvert County... You would be pretty close to work, it is slightly cheaper than the more urban parts of MD, none of the crime and congestion of the direct suburbs in MD, and the schools are great... There are lots of defense contractors around PAX River NAS so your wife should be able to find a job in HR there...

At that point you can decide to move to the northern part of the county (shorter commute for you) or the southern part (shorter commute to PAX River)...

Calvert would offer probably the best schools within a reasonable distance from Upper Marlboro, but you should understand it is quite rural. Not a lot of services or a city center or anything like that. Just small towns like Dunkirk, Owings, Huntingtown, Chesapeake Beach and North Beach (this is the Northern part of Calvert). Schools are very highly ranked and crime is relatively low for the DC area.

I would say Charles County (Waldorf, Bryans Road, White Plains). They have good schools. Resonably priced homes and lower taxes than maybe Prince George's County. From Waldorf to Upper Marlboro should take you 30 minutes. With traffic and the lights maybe 35 mins. Very nice community and low crime.

Prince George's County also has some nice areas within Upper Marlboro and Bowie. Both Bowie and Upper Marlboro has probably the counties highest rated schools. So check them out as well. Just be prepared to pay a lot in taxes in both Upper Marlboro and Bowie. They are both have low crime as well. Plenty of people will try to tell you P.G. is a complete dump and it's not. Come down. But you have a lot of place to pick from.

Thanks, for the feedback, still negotating the numbers and yes I understand the high cost of living in MD which seems to be mainly houseing costs.

Don't forget about the taxes... Especially coming from a state with no income tax you will notice a huge difference...

You're moving to Southern Maryland, or the suburban part of it, so it shouldn't be too much of a culture shock coming from Texas. It's the most culturally "Southern" part of the state these days. But that may not matter to you at all, and yes taxes are higher than in Texas. The aforementioned areas are good places to begin a neighborhood search. You're looking at fairly typical subdivisions here, and nothing terribly exciting. But you're not far from the "country" and some of the state's most beautiful rural areas as well as DC--I recommend parking at New Carrolton or another station and taking in subway into town every now and then. Good luck with the neighborhood search!

PG county does not have "a great school system" but there are decent schools like Bowie HS and Eleanor Roosevelt HS, and I am most familiar with those. Definitely look into Calvert County; PenguinSix mentioned the schools there. Charles County also.

Move to St. Mary's County and tell your wife to apply for a job on the Dept of Navy's website. HR is desperate to hire people.

I'm from Houston so maybe I can think of a similar area.
