Default What do Marylanders think of Virginians?

There seems to be an ongoing fued between the two . So close, yet so distant. I feel that maybe Marylanders feel Virginia is stuck up and snobby. Whereas Maryland views itself as a tad more liberal and progressive.

It reminds me of this song:

Maryland, My Maryland

I
The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!

II
Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
Maryland!
My Mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life or death, for woe or weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird they beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!

III
Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!

IV
Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!

V
Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And sing thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VI
Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
Sic semper! 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VII
I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek,
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VIII
Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the shot, the blade, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the Soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

IX
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! She burns! She'll come! She'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

"Virginia is stuck up and snobby", that's right and also include bible belt state... That's what I've heard since i've been working in VA since I was a teen.

It's important to note the NOVA and the rest of Virginia are like two totally different states. I never had a problem with rudeness or anything like that while living in the Hampton Roads area or my travels around blacksburg.

It's when I lived in Northern Virginia (NOVA) that I had neighbors right there next to me who could care less if I was alive, they were flat out rude (even hated it when I mowed their lawn for them), people were always in a hurry over nothing, just not a feeling of home.

That's just my experience. I don't generalize the people as a whole, I'm just identifying some common patterns I experienced. I had several really nice people that I ran across in NOVA but the usual activity in and around NOVA wasn't too pleasant for me.

I definitely think NOVA is different now, but I dont consider it another state. I don't think I need to even mention that Northern Virginia is a very Transient area- with people from all over. So its not really a clear indication of Virginians as a whole. That being said, If you go to certain areas its still a lot like the rest of Virginia. The only part of NOVA thats different to me is Arlington area and where all the Beltway is.

I think the differences betwee nothern virginia and the rest of the state are serioulsy exaggerated. 50 years ago, there was virtually no difference at all between the two.

i was born and raised in maryland and never thought there was any rivalry between the two.for that matter most maryland natives i know would rather live in virginia.maryland also currently has one of the smallest populations of people who were born there, most people are from somewhere else.

I totally agree on HR vs. NoVA. I think HR is way more livable than NoVA being from Hampton and living in Alexandria. I'm ok with MDers.

I second and third Alanboy and teleblazer. These areas are totally different. The further away from NOVA you go the change in environments you will see. I've been a victim of the rudeness that is displayed in VA. NOVA hasn't really changed that much as far as atittude in 10 years (that's how long I've worked in VA).

I love VA - once you get away from 495. I have an uncle with a cabin on the Rappahannock River and it's awesome down there. I've been to the southwestern part of the state to hike on the AT a few times and it's great down there too.

I definitely think NOVA is it's own entity - horrible drivers, traffic, rudeness, etc. Get away from there, though and VA rocks!!

NOVA didnt used to be that way. And it wasnt called "NOVA". Its kind of sad that its changed so much like that.

Does anyone have any idea that what is now NOVA was once a Federal land mass set aside for Washington D.C. but was reclaimed (annexed) by Virginia. It, the annexation, probably had a bunch to do with the income levels of the area.
I may not have all of the fact perfect but I am sure there is something to that effect at work here
