Muslims in Southern Maryland?
Hi, we are thinking of relocating to the waldorf La plata area. we are american muslims with young kids and very active in our current community in balto county. here are lots of resources up here for us and the diversity almost makes us unnoticable. Whats it like down in Southern maryland. I know there are not as many resources but what about the attitude toward not just Muslims, but other cultures and diversities? Would seeing a women who wears her scarf, draw negative starring and attention or rude comments?
Also my Dh works in DC and would be commuting. Right now we have narrowed down to a few places in waldorf and la plata (1 actually). He used the marc into DC which can be a mess and very long so we are hoping its a bit better from down there with the metro. We are first time home buyers and pretty much feel we can get something nice that we can afford down there, than up here where we'd love to stay but really cant afford to own. I wish I could live in clarksville, ellicott city, but it'll remain a dream for sometime.

Calvert County has a small Moslem population, primarily they are Doctors with a couple other professions included.
There is a mosque in Prince Frederick which was established about twenty years ago.

There is a difference between Muslims and Moslems, the difference mainly being that Muslims are usually Black Muslims, and Moslems are usually from Middle Eastern cultures as in Saudi Arabia, etc. I believe the original poster, by saying "American Muslim" is by inference referring to Black Muslims. If that is the case, I must say that I really don't see too much of a community in LaPlata. Also there are some racist, redneck KKK in this area, and there have been many hate crimes.
HOWEVER - I wouldn't let that discourage you. The population in Charles County is transitioning from majority white to being more diverse, and it seems to be transitioning as well as can be expected. Along with the transition, there is a criminal element on the fringes as well, but depending on what you are use to, its not that bad. Mustly a bunch of thugs coming from surrounding areas, and a bunch of wannabees that actually live here in Waldorf with nothing constructive to fill their days. It's manageable, though, and I'm not going to go there to compare it to neighboring areas, but it's nowhere near out of control or even near out of control.

If you are living in Waldorf you must have a car. Waldorf and La Plata area is not really for those who rely on Metro. Charles County still have the KKK/hate feel. The area is changing but it will take couple more yrs. Charles County is a rural area but there are plenty of developments that is changing the area.

Some of my friends in College were from that area, before it "gentrified" or "sprawled" or whatever has happened to it. A couple of my friends were black and their families had lived in Charles county for generations. My white friends were also very sweet and open minded. Hopefully whether or not they will be attacked by people will depend on the social group they hang out with. Based on my limited experience, they should be pretty happy in the area. I went back several years ago when I was considering working at a base there (I think it was a naval base, but I'm not sure), and the people still seemed nice, but what I didn't like is that the whole rural nature of the place seemed to have changed and it was covered with strip malls and rows of housing developments.
