The one apartment in the historic district of Laurel that I found is directly across from the elementary school. I went to google maps and entered the street view, and from what I saw touring around, it seemed like a nice area. And from the previous comments, I gather that this is a correct assessment?

KJG1963, I'm happy to hear that you currently live in the historic district of Laurel. What is it like? Does it have the feeling of a downtown area, or is it mostly where families live, and therefor quiet and safe enough to take a walk at night without worries?

im going to put it like this. lol.
I really don't think no where in the DC area is going to be as safe as MA. and Riverdale isn't really a safe area but its not like the city. Theres a quite a few bad areas in Riverdale especially along Riverdale Rd and Kenilworth Ave. You should look at Greenbelt, but stay a way from Springhill lake and Brittany Place apts.

Laurel's historic district is fairly safe. Mostly families live in the area since many of the homes are decent sized Victorians. I believe the apartment across from Laurel Elementary (Montgomery Street) is a privately owned building. It is an older building. I've never seen the tenants coming in and out of there but at least we know they aren't just hanging around out front.

Laurel has an old time Main Street, but it's not really a downtown. It is small with a mix of residential and commercial (stores, restuarants, grocer, etc.) properties. I've never had a problem walking around at night and there are always people strolling around my neighborhood. Its not a crime-free area, but it is still safe enough to walk around. We do have our less than upstanding citizens and people have been victims of crimes (robberies and assualts) but its not a common thing.

Laurel is growing and outside of the historic district is multiple restuarants, big box stores, and strip malls. We have just about everything in the area. For more upscale shopping, Columbia is close by.

You must have never been to Boston; Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Southie and a few other areas make Springhill lake look like Beverly Hills. Prince George's County as a whole (including Riverdale, Greenbelt, etc) are nothing compared to some of the areas nationwide, that are truely dangerous.

Putting things into perspective, the most dangerous area in Prince George's County last year was a group of apartment buildings along Pennsylvania Ave in Forestville. This little strip is nothing, compared to the bad parts of Blue Hill Ave in Boston.

ITA. I used to live in MA. As I remember it, parts of Western MA weren't exactly "bucolic" either. I found that part of the discussion rather amusing.

Well, yea, of course parts of western MA aren't bucolic. Hence why I described myself as living in a bucolic town, not a bucolic half of the state. However, even if I wanted to generalize, I would have been correct based solely on the ratio of urbanized areas to non-urbanized areas here. To see anything barely resembling a high rise, I have to go six towns over, not six blocks over.
