Typically, and this applies to Western MD as well, the areas that are cheaper are typically out of reasonable commuting distance for all the jobs... And even the "cheaper" places in MD don't stack of favorably with other states...

Smile Try another NC area

Raleigh/Durham area has good home prices and many hospitals(for nursing jobs) and good schools and would be much closer for return visits to DE.

The poster is a nurse and I can tell you, the eastern shore hospitals are definitely looking for nurses. She can live in a great small town with cheap homes like Willards and commute 15-20 minutes to work with no traffic other than Uncle Buck moving his cows across the road to the other field. LOL

Well if her first choices were Charlotte and Waldorf I doubt she wants to live in that rural of an area...

That being said rural NC is still cheaper than rural MD...

Not true. Allegany County is rural Western Maryland is one of the most affordable places to live in the entire country. The median home price in 2008 was under 100k, the 13th cheapest in the country. All of the places that were cheaper were in the northern rust belt, none were from NC or the rest of the south.

Perhaps this is true in western MD very far away from all of the jobs for most people, but not as much on the Eastern Shore and not at all in Southern MD...

I used to live in Gaithersburg, MD. I recommend you areas in counties like Washington, Carroll, Howardd, Calvert, Baltimore, Garrett but not Montgomery county because is the most expensive county in MD and, i used to pay my one bedroom apartment $1125/month with my job as hair braider and i couldn't pay the rent, electricity, water, cable, food. It cost me a lot until my boyfriend told me to move with him in Raleigh, NC and to tell you the truth i am happier in NC than MD. You have a choice you know the United States is a huge country and plus we have many good school over there but if you really want to live in MD you have to be prepared for a good job because life is expensive.

Bonne Chance(good luck).

OP--if you are a single mom, I am guessing you have children still in school. I hear that the NC public schools aren't not up to par with many other states' public schools (however, their colleges are great). MD has wonderful public schools and has some great colleges as well. I agree with KIMMERS333 but know that as a nurse, you can find a job just about anywhere, but you'll need to afford the rent. Also, your commute from MD to DE will be quicker than NC to DE. Being in DE you know about MD and what it can offer...why is NC on your radar too? Do you know people there?

Best of luck to you!
