The majority of people who post here about the insane cost of living are most likely from the metro area. Having lived in Frederick then Hagerstown (beginning of western md), I've never had any problems with this. The job market isn't quite as diverse as the areas closer to DC but in Frederick anyway, the cost of living isn't nearly as bad as the rest of central md and many commute via 270 into Mont. County. Traffic can still be just as bad, but that's what you get for living in this area.

And of course, the farther west you go the cheaper it gets, though job opportunities go down as well.

I lived in southern MD over 1.5 hours away from Baltimore and DC and it was still extremely expensive there... Even though it gets cheaper as you get a little bit out west it still is more expensive than a lot of other states areas within the same proximity of the city...

While there are not a lot of big companies here as there is around the big cities... I would suggest the eastern shore of Md as a great place to live and raise children.

Keep in mind that while the salaries are lower, so are the costs of living.

Willards, Parsonsburg, Pittsville... all great areas to raise children, the schools are decent, 15 minutes to the beach or Salisbury for shopping. Quiet, laid back, relaxing.
