I drove through Frederick a few times. I concur, Frederick looks congested in the downtown area, but once outside, it's definitely not at all bad. Very rural, and I love Gambrill State Park. So peaceful and offers such a beautiful overlook!
I can't really say more in-depth, however, as I haven't actually touched any places/stores in Frederick, other than Taco Bell.

I like Frederick. It's the "getting to" part I don't like. I haven't been there in two years but I-70 always had construction around the Frederick exits and personally, I would never do the I-270 commute to and from DC.

I visit Frederick quite often. I like it because it is truly a small, but yet large American City. However, traffic is becoming much heavier and getting as bad as major cities. The central part of the city is wonderful, especially during the Holiday season. I really love the candlelight tours.

Wow, I'm surprised to see all of the hostility and vitriol towards Frederick. We lived in Damascus for four years, spent a ton of time in Frederick, and I absolutely adored it. It had old fashion, quaint "charm" with a modern, urban feel to it. The worst thing about Frederick in my opinion was the smoking in restaurants, but they banned it back in 2008. The traffic DOES get pretty bad around the mall, Costco, and the shopping centers, but no more than any other city at rush hour.
We nearly bought a house there 5 years ago in the North Crossing development, but through no fault of our own, we fell out of escrow. After that, we were pretty much traumatized by the house buying process, and just ended up renting in Damascus. My husband is Navy and was stationed in Bethesda, so this worked out a little better for us.
But, I came across the documents just last week while packing, and looked up the address online. That townhouse is now in foreclosure, and selling for nearly 100k less than what we would have bought it for. So considering what we know now, it was sheer luck that we ended up NOT buying in Frederick.
I suppose it has been hit pretty hard in the housing crisis, which of course would bring down the quality of the neighborhoods. Still, I would have been happy living in Frederick. I don't know what's so awful about it.

I lived in Frederick in 1998-2000 and really liked it. The downtown was nice with many small shops and restaurants and what I see of the riverwalk,it's great. I would still live there if I didn't have health and family issues. But I do agree,it's gotten too crowded with the traffic lately as I noticed when I drove through there last year.
