My advice depends on different factors. If you are looking closer to Philly, Baltimore County would most likely be the closest because of the easy access interstate highways.
If you are thinking of staying 2-5 years and are looking at this from an investment standpoint, booming real estate areas are Anne Arundel, Howard and Carroll Counties.
You didn't mention whether you have children, but Howard county school systems are ranked 8th in the US, from last time I checked. Anne Arundel has been developing and continuously growing.
If you are looking for something with more land for your buck and a more laid back atmosphere, Carroll county may be of interest.

gaithersburg Maryland is my opinion is one of the worst areas in Montgomery county. I think it will become crime infested in the next 2-3 yrs. I would never live there until I see changes. It is one of the cheapest city in Montgomery county due to the fact I think its mostly hispanics and some people think they bring down property value. Homes are cheap there

Depends on what part of Gaithersburg you are talking about. Most parts west of 270 are great, including Kentlands, Lakelands, Darnestown, Travilah (all with a 20878 zip). Generally though most parts east of 270 aren't so great, like Montgomery Village, off of East Diamond, Flower Valley, etc., but they aren't worse than parts of White Oak, Germantown, Aspen Hill, parts of Silver Spring and Takoma Park, Wheaton, Glemont, or even the Gude triangle in Rockville.

Well I am Hispanic and we are just as educated as everyone else and wouldnt think that if hispanics live in a area it would be worst or bring down property value because if that is the case any nationality can do that ...
Thanks For the advice that a couple of people have given and as for the Washionton Dc area Wouldnt never live there... I'm From Philly And My Husbands From New York and we need something closer to home and Baltimore because we actually love all three cities so we want the best of all three... But since we are planning to move To Maryland We just wanted Advice were it is better to purchase a house.... So the people who gave great advice thanks and if anyone has positive remarks about Maryland that actually live there and love it your advice is appericated for the Negative people who live there and dont like it keep your negative comments to yourself because there is a reason you are living there ....Thanks

Like I said... Try Harford County. 20 miles. to baltimore, Delaware, 2 hours to NYC a little over an hour from Philly, and cheaper living, quality of life.

I am not targeting hispanics what i mention in my statements is some people think hispanics bring down property value. This is not my personal opinion about hispanics because i do know a few wealthy and educated hispanics. If you feel this a been negative welcome to Maryland because if you ask anyone about an area that is affulent Hispanics you more then likely will get negative response sorry to say. I am an minority myself and I have no problem with hispanics at all.

Check out the Eastern Shore
We lived on the eastern shore of Maryland for quite a few years. Specifically Kent and Queen Anne's counties. Kent County is about 1 hour from Philly. It is close to Dover, Middletown, and Annapolis which all have quite a bit to do. We lived on the Chester River, so we were always boating, fishing, crabbing, etc. In fact we are still holding on to 2 waterfront lots...just in case....

I moved from Long Island, NY to Elkton, MD, and can report that I love it here. I think there are some neighbourhoods you might want to avoid (some of the lower income trailer parks have reports of trouble -- but many such have single parent households, with all the usual problems associated with such), but there are many developments with family orientated populations.
Coming to Elkton was like making money, after life on Long Island, with its taxes and traffic. I had 5.5 acres on LI, and paid nearly $1100 A MONTH in RE taxes. Here, I have 25.75 acres, and a 'stylish' A-frame (not a style I would normally have chosen, as they are best suited for heavy snow loads ...), and pay under $2200 A YEAR. I do have an 'ag' discount, but without it, would still be paying under $3500 a year!
I can recommend a good RE agent, if you've not already found one you like. He will work for and with you -- his name is Kelly Potter, Sr. He lives in Elkton; he isn't the usual, 'buy it, now, or you'll lose it ....' type. I don't remember what agency he's with, but a quick google search provided this info:
Phone: 410-287-0696 x504
Cell: 443-553-5386
Fax: 410-287-0697
Good luck in your search for a new home!
