Njrover, thank you so much for the insight as to extra taxes in NC! I didn't know that!! I know in NH my SIL said you have to pay a yearly tax on your car even if you didn't buy it there which I think is insane. I'm surprised NC does the same thing. Here in NY we have the yearly inspection situation which I could do without too...I know my Dad and stepmom have it in PA too. Looks like they will stick it to you any way they can. Thanks again though because I never thought to ask those questions!!

No problem. I do not mind paying taxes when I know they are needed. New schools being built, better roads, extra. However, here in MD we are just beginning to get taxed like crazy. I think that taxes should be paid by everyone. It seems like MD sticks it to those that own homes and make us foot the bill. There are plenty of people who rent or live at home with mommy and daddy that could help. A lot of people own cars, so it makes sense lets tax everyones car, that will bring in a equal amount of money and make everyone responsible not just the property owners. I look at it this way. I currently own a duplex, and I could never be able to own a decent single famliy home here. My taxes were 1400/yr 4 years ago, they are now 2800/yr...now that is ridiculous. People comment well we have to pay for the schools and roads, etc. Why do only the property owners have to pay for them? Do people that rent not have children in school? Plus I do not see Maryland making new roads, I just see them repaving roads. In NC they are making major highways. For example in Raleigh, that have two major highways going up, 540 and by pass 70. My property taxes there on a brand new single family home will be 1870/yr, now the property in NC has more sq footage, more land, more everything, compared to my home in MD. So if I have to add my car tax which for both vehicles might be 300-400 a year, then I pay 2270 a year in taxes, which I do not mind, it is still cheaper then here, and I get more for my money. Plus I know that EVERYONE is chipping in and that helps keep my property taxes liveable. I lived in NY for 23 years, I too hate that aweful annual inspection-sometimes I swear they told you something was wrong so they could make more money
