Default Sick and tired of california and wanting a change!

Hello all,

I am a California native who is thinking of moving to Baltimore. I attended the presidential inauguration and was impressed with the diversity of the area (I was in Glen Burnie to be specific).

Anyhow, with the California economy being what it is I am looking to move elsewhere. As of present....I am an out of work teacher and hoping to return to that profession. However, I am willing to do other work.

Can someone please be so kind and provide with me some insight on the employment in the area as well as the best places to live. I currently live in the suburbs and would like to live in a similar area as I have a 7 year old son.

Thanks for your time!

I live in the hyattsville area, I think you should check out Bowie or Laurel, I think you will like it.
I don't blame you for wanting to leave CA it seem soo expensive to live there.

That's funny I am trying to do the reverse move! I understand how being somewhere all your life or for a long time you just need a change at some point. Most of the jobs in the area are in the DC area. They are the jobs that pay the most. As far as location I would need to know your budget and what you are looking for. I suggest Bowie/Crofton to newcomers for the DC area or for Baltimore area Ellicott City, Owings Mills, Cockeysville... I can go on and on. Let me know the criteria for a better assessment. Right now I live in Harford County, it is just north of Baltimore right off of I-95 and it's very inexpensive and affordable housing. The schools are so much better than those points south and they have a smaller teacher-student ratio. Montgomery County, can't help you there but I do know it can get expensive.

Default Also planning to relocate to MD from CA in the fall

I'll be moving to Maryland so my kids will be closer to dad (he lives in Abingdon). I want to be a reasonable distance from him but would prefer a safe area, reasonable cost of living ( my starter budget for a 2br apt is $1100). I'll come without a job but will do other work to keep a roof over our heads. Is harford the place I'm looking for? Btw, I'm a technology professional. I'm open to suggestions as I need to narrow this down before my next scouting trip in April. Thanks all.

You might be in luck in Harford County- there's a rather large influx of jobs coming with the local Army base's realignment.

Most areas of Harford are safe, except some suspect areas of Edgewood and Aberdeen. Abingdon is affordable and they have some jobs here but right now some folks commute to Baltimore County/City for work. Alot of folks commute to DC on the MARC also so you will have a big area to work with when you are searching. PM if you need additional info!

look toward the D.C. area (Prince George's and Montgomery Counties), much more diverse and more jobs.

which one are you referring to? the OP or nsaunders? She said she wanted to be close to Abingdon. As far as the OP, for the jobs closer would be better than Harford, commuting from here is murder!

I was a one time Maryland resident, now in Chicago. If you think the area is diverse where you attended the presidential inauguration, that's only because it is a "once in a lifetime" event of voting in the first Black President. Of course it will be diverse. The diverse population all over the country attended the event. Actually Glen Burnie is not diverse as in Chicago or NYC or California. It's more rednecky. Seriously. Go to the DMV in Glen Burnie.

And Baltimore is the EXACT opposite of REDNECKY. Don't take my word for it, see for yourself...

Baltimore is ok. It's not diverse. But I actually liked Baltimore more than Chicago. I'd either be moving back to the east coast or move to the south west soon this year.

Most (but not all) places in Harford or Cecil county would be good (as in low price/low crime rate/good schools). PG county is pretty much the opposite on all counts. Montgomery is good, but expensive.
There are more jobs close in to DC, but they come with all the headaches (traffic etc). If Abingdon is the key thing bringing you here, then stay close to Harford county. With the BRAC, there are several thousand tech jobs coming to APG (Aberdeen Proving Ground), starting this summer.
