My daughter is at the naval academy and i am trying to get a job in the DC metro area. How far is Northern Virginia from Annapolis and DC ?
I don't know the areas. I will be renting and wnat to at least be able to visit her within a few hours.

Where is the best place to live Virginia, Dc or maryland.?

Wherever you choose to settle, try to find a job on the same side of the Potomac River as your residence. Don't try to commute between VA and MD, as all the river crossings are major bottlenecks and strained over their capacity. The DC metro overall has the second worst traffic in the USA, according to AAA rankings for the last several years. And be prepared for high housing / rental prices.

Assuming no traffic (big assumption), you can get to Annapolis from anywhere inside the Beltway in an hour or less.

If you're further out in VA, then add a bit more time.

What kind of job? There are jobs in the Annapolis area and surrounding bits as well.

If your goal is to be near your daughter in 'Napolis, move to Anne Arundel county. You can work in'Napolis, Baltimore or DC.

Depending on where in Northern Va. you are, and traffic conditions, your travel time to Navy will be between one and two hours. Not bad for weekend visits but a pain for a daily trek.

But it begs the question of why Northern Virginia? Unless you have an important reason for settling there, you could find many places that are closer and less expensive with equal or better job opportunities. Almost anywhere along the Baltimore to Annapolis corridor would be better in all three regards, - distance, housing cost and jobs.

Where have you heard that the job situation is better in MD? I've heard the unemployment in NoVa is lower.

Either way, I don't think it really matters where in the DC area she locates. It's not like she's going to see her daughter every day. No kid wants to see their parents every day when they're in college!
