Pg county do have some nice affordable areas. Now think what type of areas you want like example: Alot of people here bash pg county but pg county is the 2nd wealthies county in maryland. Pg county is the first and still is the wealthiest county in America that is Majority minorites. So if I were you and this is how I think I would want to live where there is financial on the map as far as money and affordablitiy goes. just to give you an heads up Please stay away from Baltimore city or county because in the next 3-5 yrs Baltimre will get hit with a high crime wave. I am an investor in Baltimore and everyday my husband and I complain about drug activity next to ur home the police would tell us they will try. We have been hearing this now for 3 weeks straight the same excuse the worst just happen 2 days a go. A young men just lost his life to gun violence and this stupid police department tells me they will try but when we found out about the death the very next day we called the ploce department and they reply we know the person got shot a 10am and that was it nothing else. I am in tears rights now just thinking about it.
I will not stop until the Police finally do something about the violence on the block we are investing in and the next block we move to I will do the same. We could have saved someone's life here and I feel so bad. |

Hey JerseyGirl, There is truth in all your answers from what I see. I live in PG and based on what your looking for your family, PG might not be Ideal.
1) School systems not where it should be - we do private & it hurts $$$. Montgomery & Howard Co. has the best. 2) Violent crimes are on the rise Nationwide (FBI stats) and PG is no different. We're all ready avg. more homocides this year then the last but not nearly as much as Trenton. So to you this might seem a better choice but to those of us who live here, well we just want to see it get better. All and all it could be a lot worst. 3) Cost of living anywhere around DC is what hurts the most. Houses and housing is not cheap but you can find a place, its just not always a better place from what your trying to flee. PG is not all that bad but the trend in MD. now is Charles & St. Mary's Co. (just south of PG) for what your talking about. Apart from this forum have you logged on to Washington Post / Washington Times websites? Just to get a taste of some local news about the DC area, PG included. If you like, I could send you a local newspaper in the county. |

Every county have its issues but people mention Howard county is better then pg county but pgcounty is the 2nd wealthiest county in Maryland so please donot compare pg to Howard. Every county have its nice and quite areas. I am in the real estate industry and majority of my clients are moving to pg county from Montgomery and other county so I have been to everywhere in the county. I have been to the homes in very nice neighborhoods and ok neighborhods. There are schools in the county that is very nice. If you want to grow financially in your career I would move to Pg county there are a lot of growth here.
When I was living in Washington Dc Nw near Walter reed I had people who have never been to dc due to the negative news about Dc couple yrs back and thye thought Dc was the same. I would tell them visit DC its change a lot they would never believe me because of the bad name cirling Dc for all those yrs. Its the same thing with PG county a lot of folks on this forum lived in pg before all the changes now so they have the same opinions thinking Pg was 10 years ago. People donot realize that things are changing for the best for all of our citizens. I have never witness a crime in PG county a friend of mine live in Montgomery county and across the street form her home 6 people died in the same apartment complex last summer due to gun violence but yet her dad talk about how no one should ever go to Washington Dc. |

Things are changing, but if you plan on having your kids in public school, or you cannot afford private school or can't afford the nice areas of PG don't move there. The school system is horrible. They'd be better off in Jersey schools (speaking from experience)

I think Carroll County could be a solution....I live here, and sometimes I forget to lock my doors... (don't try it though...when I do it...it's accidental =P)
Housing is way more affordable....You should speak to a lender exactly as to how much mortgage payment you could handle if you are thinking of buying...I could refer someone who I used in the past... Christina Yoon - Maryland Homes & Real Estate: MLS you can visit my website, search around the MLS. If I can help you further, please let me know. |

You would love pg county. Its so funny people say pg county school is not good but when people mention Washington DC they tend to say its nice to live there with kids but Washdington Dc school system is 10 times worst then pg county. Because majority of the people moving to washington dc are white everyone is on the band wagon but I tent to think certain people have there opinion about pg because of the race. people forgot to mention pg county do have some good schools just like in every county. If pg county school is so bad then why the Hell is pg county the 2nd wealthiest county in Maryland.

Correction - "2nd wealthiest county in Maryland" it is wealthy, but again, the schools are still horrible! If I'm not in your neighborhood (Upper Marlboro) 9 times out of 10 my child would be in a bad school. I'm so happy that Deasy is instituting the programs that my son had when we were in Jersey, making all the secondary schools specialized. Now they need that for the elementary schools. It will happen in time, but right now I wouldn't put my kid in a PG County school unless I was in a good school district area or could afford private school... And since PG is so wealthy, they need to spend money hiring more police officers and training them to be COMPETENT enough to prevent crime and catch criminals...

lscalder, you keep saying that PG is the 2nd wealthest county in Maryland. What do you mean? I know that PG does not rank 2nd in per capita or median family or household income. Normally it is these measures that are used by the census bureau to rank the wealth of an area.

I grew up in PG county and graduated from the school system. I agree that it is not best school system. Iscalder wants to know why PG county is so wealthy if the schools are so bad. I can tell you that most of the wealthy people in PG county did not go thru the school system. As others have mentioned, Carroll, Calvert, St. Mary's, Anne Arundel, and Howard counties have better school systems and are better places to live. You could live in one of these areas, put your kids in a good school system, and still take a short commute to PG county for work or look for better offers in other areas of Maryland or even Northern Virginia will have a better pay rate. Your current $18 or $19 hour you should do fine. I think you will also find gas, insurance, and the cost of living to be lower in Maryland counties other than PG. I currently live in Anne Arundel county and love it. I am only 30 minutes from PG county about 45 minutes from Largo.
