Well with your limited income potential right now, I would say you are going to have a hard time anywhere in Maryland finding what you are looking for. However I think because of your job being in the medical field you would indeed find what you are looking for in Maine or possibly New Hampshire. Just a thought. Good luck to you!

"limited income potential"? I would say she would be OK, just not in PG. Maybe Baltimore County or north of is a lot cheaper.

If you are leaving because of gangs and jobs then Md is not the place for you. This state is headed in the same direction. I would suggest you search another state all togeether.

I personally would not recommend Prince Georges County due to the high cost of living in that area. The closer you get to Washington D.C., the more it cost to live. Government workers, contractors and military personnel receive cost-of-living adjustments to make life more afforordable for them while they are there.
Just like you, I am also black, so you are getting this from a black perspective. I was in the military and have lived in Philidelphia, Baltimore and and various counties within Maryland. I also do a lot of travel throughout Delaware and know Delaware very well.
I would strongly recommend Delaware for you an your family. I have family and friends who are very happy living there. Delaware is very affordable, has some very nice communities, plenty of malls, numerous jobs opportunities in your field and no sales tax. It's much nicer than PG County.
If you do decide on Delaware I would suggest you look into areas close by Interstate 95, such as Wilmington, Bear, Stanton and communities along
Route 40.

That's interesting because on the Delaware boards, the people are bashing the state left and right.

I think natives of every state are bashing. We should all shift to other states, as change has made places very unwelcoming, unfamiliar and here in MD, unaffordable! I echo kimbo123 sentiments. It's not by a long shot Trenton, but with the many people transplanting (including yourself) to the areas, the place has changes, crime has risen, and we will too are being seen as another New Jersey, or a northern state.

Mesi_Miyon-
As a former resident of PG County I can attest that crime is a problem there. Obviously, crime is everywhere but it's pretty bad in PGC. This has nothing to do with race in my opinion. Although I'm white, alll of my neighbors were black (when I lived in PG) and they were very friendly and neighborly. They were all much better neighbors than the one's I've had here in So. Cal where I now live.
Anyway, I read a post from someone suggesting Delaware. This is one of the more 'tax friendly' states; therefore, since taxes eat up about 40%-50% of our income (as an entirety), DE may be a worth a look. Good Luck to you.

Mesi, I just spent the last several hours searching online for apartments in various states. Somehow I got to this site and I fell upon your posting. I was born and raised in Hamilton Township, and am still living there. For those that don't know, Hamilton Twp. is right outside of Trenton, NJ. When I was born Hamilton Twp. was so small that we didn't warrant having our own post office so we had a Trenton mailing address. Since then Hamilton has developed, as most places do, and we have our own post office now. And sadly, it's our main post office where the anthrax letters were sent from.
Either last year or the year before Hamilton Twp. was voted one of the top 10 safest places to live in the US. Since you can find me taking cover under the bed when I hear a car backfire nowadays I found that hard to believe.
You're right, Trenton is very bad now. It seems like they're averaging 3 - 4 murders a week. I give you a lot of credit for wanting to better life for yourself and your sons and I wish you all the best with your plans of moving from Trenton.
For me, it's not so much Hamilton that I hate, I'm just tired of paying high prices for everything when living in a toxic state.

PA,MD,& WVA have outlying counties that offer more affordable housing & safer areas. There are healthcare and dental jobs in these counties. There r some areas that offer diversity, some areas r more insulated, not used to newcomers. I have found certain towns to be very welcoming if one wants to be a good citizen and involved.
Visit each area & assess the local flavor. Walking thru town on a visit gave me a good look and feel for what was ok and not so ok. Look at areas that offer dicversity along w/ good schools and safety.Websites and links will have that info. Good luck, have fun. Read the town or city's papers (online).
