How far is the commute from Germantown to Bethesda? By car? By metro??

There is not a metrorail stop in Germantown (yet).
You would need to take a bus to the Shady Grove Station in Rockville then I would say 15 minutes on the Rail to Bethesda.

Metro bus - I would think that you would need to take two buses to get to Bethesda.

As far as driving. Rush hour about 45+ minutes. Non-rush hour - about 15 minutes (depending on what route you take).

Yeah 45 on a good day 2 hours on a bad day, snow day or rain day or Friday before a Holiday.
