I've noticed that too...except that I do know people who are quite proud to be from New Jersey. But perception-wise, NJ is bad. I always thought of MD as positive, but most Maryland posters don't seem to portray it as such at all.
Thats because they are not true Maryland Tax Paying Citizens.......
I was just here browsing the internet, on a Saturday early evening, late spring. In the middle of Pennsylvania. At the butt end of a four day weekend, due to Memorial Day.
I moved to Maryland after my wife of 20 years kicked me out of the house, because, she needed to find herself. I had to have a place to live, and the only one able to put me up for a short basis, was my sister who was in the mist of a divorce, too. In Laural, Maryland.
I have never earned more the 33k all my life, and I'm now 53.
I have good work skills, be there on time. Do your best. Understand the basics of what needs to be done to survive. These are: get food, shelter, life, love, progress. Be with luck. God. Attitude. Roll with the punches, but never giving up. Or stopping.
Mainly, though through the love of a beautiful Maryland woman. Whom, I met on the early internet of the late 1990's.
With these skills. And her. I was able to be employed, stay employed at $21,000 to $24, 000 over seven years, paying off child support. Rent a room from my new wife's mother. The matriarch had her rules that I honored. I lived the life of a Marylander. Fresh crab outside on a sweltering summer night, rooting for the Orioles (never had to spell "Orioles" before, weird!). Cold beer watching Ravins football the rest of the years.
In short, I was adopted into a family of real Marylanders and survived it; and, found that Marylanders are, on the whole, loving, stoic people. But, also who are so full of love. That once a Maryland family gets you, you're a goner.
That's why I live in Pennsylvania, now. And, we're going strong with my 20 year old stepson. Who's a good kid.
Pensylvanian's. Maybe, I'll browse their website soon!
I've spent my teenage years in maryland, moved away, then moved back. I will say, that I wish I hadn't. There is so much negativity here that it really brings you down. Maryland has some beautiful places and lots to see and do, if you willing to drive a bit everytime but the people are rude and look down at each other.
Yes DC is close and has a lot to see but I've seen alot of it on field trips. Usually after going to the musuems once or twice, that's about it. You can take a trip into DC and see it all.
I live in southern maryland so I really don't know very much about the rest of maryland but by what I have read and seen, many people in Montgomery county think they are god's gift to the world (this does not include everyone up there). Baltimore has alot of crime, alot of drugs and not so good areas. Western Maryland is nice but there are not alot of jobs over there. Eastern shore - I've never been. I know most people have been to ocean city but i've heard it really is not that great. Beaches of NC are probably better and cleaner. Reverse racism is an issue.
As to southern maryland, it is a little more country here but I will say when my mom moved my brother and I here when we were kids, it was a rude awakening. The children are snots because their parents are. We had a very hard time adjusting and making friends. That might be something you may want to consider. The people are more rude here and not very neighborly friendly. Right now and for the past 8 years, I have lived on a farm (not a very big farm- about 70 acres) that is surrounded by neighborhoods. I couldn't tell what our neighbors names are. Nobody talks to one another here. People tend to keep to themselves more. This does not mean everywhere is like that but you'll have look around for it.
Traffic- it is not fun. The problem is that we have alot of transplants here and everyone has their own way of driving- usually not in a good way. There was some legislative attempts to change the legal driving age to 18 because we have so many teenagers being killed on the roads. They are too inexperienced and there are too many drivers on the roads to make good decisions. Parts of Maryland have very curving roads.
Visit Maryland first and get a feel for it to see if it is for you. It is not for everyone.
Eveyonecwho commented on the negatives of this state hit the nail on the head. Yes parts are beautiful (mountain MD esp) but the amount of traffic (esp dc area and md sha is broke and will never increase capacity on the roads) the politics (if your not liberal, your vote will NOT matter) very very high taxes for business, property and wages. High rents due to this high tax. If your rich and have a great federal or state/county/city job then this state is for you. The schools I will say are excellent in most of central MD (except balt city, and parts of balt/pg/aa county) the weather is more of a few weeks of fall few weeks of spring and then long hot and humid summers and bitter cold winters but little snow. The people are rude, in a rush, tailgate you for no reason (even going way over the limit on the highway) think there above you and its like keeping up with the joneses 24/7. Its expensive here. Food, gas, hotels, etc cost more then other states (beleive me I know because I go to other states frequemtly.
Overall its a fun (expensive) place to visit, but not to live imo
Maryland is good if you depend on the government, are on welfare, use Medicaid, or are illegal. If you are a middle class American citizen it is terrible, with some of the highest taxes in the nation, including the only Rain Tax and Wind Farm Tax in America. Illegal aliens get in state tuition. The government restricts rural development and promotes transit-oriented development which means they prefer people living on top of each other in dense urban areas with subways vs the traditional American Dream of the suburbs.
I do like the seafood here, and the proximity of the ocean and bay and the mountains. Though if you go further south like North Carolina, the ocean and mountains are further apart, but they have nicer beaches and nicer mountains.

Average high of 43F is not "bitter cold". Neither is average low of 22F.
I hate to keep correcting you but the Flush Tax was not O'Malley's but Ehrlich's. I also hate to have to defend that ****** *** drinking, *** **** eating, elfin looking current Governor so please stop crediting him with the Flush Tax.

You sound like Michelle Bachmann lite. Perhaps you would take that as a compliment. It's not meant as one. Maryland is one of the richest states in the country, and has the top rated school system in the country. The taxes may be somewhat high but I don't mind because I love living in MD. I have lived in a number of states and I am the happiest here.
I don't work for the government as many people in MD don't, I'm not on welfare as most people in MD aren't, I'm not on Medicaid as I would imagine most people in MD aren't, and I am not an illegal alien, as most people in MD aren't.
You might want to turn off Fox news, turn down Rush Limbaugh and get your so called ideas in line with the facts. Just because you think something doesn't make it so.
Your idea of the American dream is outdated by about 50 years. Perhaps you yearn for the good old days, but the times they are a changing. If you like being stuck in traffic then the good old suburbs may suit you, but you represent a dying breed. Rapid transit is the future, like it or not.

I'm white, and I have been the subject of no "reverse" racism in Baltimore in three years of living here, 2 of them living in mixed neighborhoods, commuting through black neighborhood on public transportation and my bike.
Some folks are going to call me a pollyana or even worse, a liar, but I just haven't experienced it. What I have experienced is my white peers (most of them Cantonites) telling tales of their suffering incidents of "reverse" racism on a daily basis.
In the year I lived in Hampden, which is nearly all-white, I heard the N word more often than anywhere else I've lived to and witnessed two racially-motivated fights (and had to call the cops).
This is simply my experience. I won't respond to anybody who questions it because I'm just reporting the facts and my observations.
This is still a fairly segregated city and it is because of racism and illogical fears. But there are more mixed neighborhoods than people think.
Black people around Baltimore and even the Eastern Shore openly express how they worship Obama and supported him in both elections primarily because he is black. There is also a racial consciousness among illegal immigrants and a racial solidarity between legal Hispanics and illegal aliens that helped bring about the survival of the Illegal Alien Dream Act. I'm persaonlly been called racial slurs (I am of Asian descent) because of my bumper stickers supporting McCain and Palin. Now I do hear the N word used in Baltimore County but its never when a black person is present, and its usually not meant to refer to all blacks but only the ghetto people.
There have been a number of racist assaults against white people, including white females, on the MTA buses. There was one especially savage and brutal attack on a white woman where a gang of 10 thugs attacked her because she was white but the city prosecutors refused to bring hate crimes charges.

Reading your posts, you aren't any different. You only vote for people with an R next to their name and repeat claims that have been debunked. "Oh he's a Democrat, he must be one of the liberal...that's bad" "I don't like that, that's liberal" How many times does North Beach Person have to mention that Ehrlichinitiated the Flush Tax?
Oh you been called racial slur, now you know how it feels to be discriminated as you do the same thing.
People drive too fast and agressively; you'll beat your car to pieces driving on city and Baltimore County streets. The Democrat machine controls the state and its influence, I think, can extend to U.S.District court insofar as getting a case dropped. If it weren't for family considerations I would likely head back to Indiana.
