As a clarification: Government employees are "public sector." I think you mean to say "private sector."

Nonetheless, I'm not aware of any occupations in the government that pay employees "2 or 3 times" what their private sector counterparts would make. Many government employees in the DC/Northern Virginia/MD region do long commutes to be able to afford it...it would only be affordable for those in senior-level positions.

I agree with the point of your post, but I think it would be more accurate to say:" If you are a physician or an attorney in a DC law firm...than yes, MD (near DC) is a fine place to live." I don't think the post makes as much sense when using government employees as the example, as most are not paid well enough to live comfortably in the high cost areas of MD.
