I just saw Frederick is the only city with Barnes&Nobles...nothing west of that, and West Virginia seems to lack them as well.

I didn't look up Borders...do they have a monopoly on it...are there other bookstores dominating Western Maryland? Thinking of Hagerstown & Cumberland in particular...?

The Book Center is Cumberland is a privately owned bookstore downtown. There is also a chain store at the County Club Mall. There are used bookstores as well in the area.

Borders in Hagerstown off I-81, and one or two at the mall (books a million maybe?)

Serious readers I know rave about this bookstore: Wonder Book - Wonder Book

Also used bookstore around town, including one longtime one downtown.

Unfortunately, Waldenbooks in the Country Club Mall is the only "new book" store in the entire area. It's tiny, more like an airport book store than a full-fledged B&N or Borders.

If you live in Western MD and want to buy a book, then Amazon.com or Abe.com are your best options.
